1At the center of the figure, the stomach and the small intestine present the origin of the entry of substance into the body. — The lacteals, ending at the thoracic duct with the spleen as the center of condensation (Malfatti's hypothesis), and the veins ending at the portal vein with the liver as condensing center, figure the circulation of the renewal of the material elements of the organism. The chain of ganglia and plexuses of the lymphatic circulation, beginning at the level of the arterial capillaries and going to join the venous system near the heart, schematically show the circulation of the lymph, a true drainage of the substance that has not found its use during the circulation of the blood. Finally, at the bottom, the large intestine shows the paths of excretion of unassimilated foods. 2° Middle segment. In the middle we see the well-known diagram of the circulation of the blood. — On the left, the circulation of red blood, of blood laden with matter and force, a circulation figured by a double line. — Setting out from the lung, the blood reaches — 222 — the organs, passing by way of the left heart, the great regulator of this circulation. On the right, the centripetal circulation of black blood, figured by a black line.
2Setting out from the organs by the venous capillaries, the blood reaches the right heart, loading itself with matter along the way under the influence of the suprahepatic vein and the thoracic duct. — From the right heart, the blood passes by the ventricle into the lung, where it is to be charged with force, and finally sets out again from the lung, laden this time with the two elements it had lost: force and matter. 3° Peripheral segment. The sanguine force, sublimated by the cerebellum (Dr. Luys's theory), is transformed into nervous fluid and takes two great directions according to the point of incitement. If this point of incitement is in the senses, the current produced is centripetal. The excitation crosses the posterior spinal ganglion and reaches either the posterior brain (conscious circulation), or the posterior gray matter of the spinal cord and, from there, the anterior gray matter (reflex circulation). If the excitation has reached the brain, a nervous current is established — a current whose conditions physiology has not yet fully determined — and psychic circulation comes into being. The result of this psychic circulation is the production of an idea, acting from within outward, just as the material object, origin of sensation, acts from without inward. The current sets out from the anterior brain by the first-order projection fibers, crosses the cerebral ganglia, where it is reinforced, follows the motor cords of the — 223
3anterior spinal cord, then the motor nerves, and reaches the organs with striated fibers. In the case where the excitation passes directly from the posterior cord (gray matter) into the anterior cord (gray matter), there is nothing corresponding to psychic circulation. Sensation transforms into movement, but the power of the movement and its diffusion depend solely on the magnitude of the excitation. The excess nervous force is drained and condensed by the special system of the great sympathetic nerve, whose ganglia and plexuses correspond in every point to the lymphatic ganglia and plexuses. It is likewise thanks to this drainage, setting out from the anterior gray matter of the spinal cord, that the nervous force, acting in jerks in the preceding circulations, is transformed into a continuous force, acting upon the organs with smooth fibers. Finally, at the bottom of the three segments, we find: 1° The extra-peritoneal portion of the large intestine, with the anus, the organ of excretion of the alimentary circulation and of the abdomen in general; 2° The kidney and the bladder, with their ducts, organs of excretion of the sanguine circulation and of the chest in general; 3° The testicles, the seminal vesicles, and the associated ducts, which we are led to regard as the organs of rapid and instantaneous excretion of the nervous force. One may follow, one by one, all these details on the overall diagram found in the accompanying plate.
