Literally the quaternary is designated by four Hebrew letters: HW.

The first * (iod) represents the active.

The second H (he) is the image of the passive.

The third! (vau) represents the bond that unites the two.

Finally the fourth H (he) is the second repeated, and indicates the perpetuity of the productions of Osiris-Isis.

To write these letters in the manner of the initiates, they must be arranged in a cross, thus:

H

n

— 970 —

In this case, the direction indicates the meaning of the elements, for the active elements (iod and vau) are on the same vertical line.

The passive elements are on the same horizontal line.

One can likewise designate this quaternary by different forms:

The Wand, image of the active, will represent the iod (*).

The Cup, hollow, image of the passive, will represent the first he

The Sword, or image of the alliance of the active and the passive,

The Cross will represent the vau (1).

The Disk will represent two cups superimposed, and hence 2 times 2, indicating the repetition of the he (H).

Wand or Club
Cup or Heart
Sword or Spade
Disk or Diamond

Such are the elements, images of the absolute, that constitute the playing cards.

These elements are painted in two opposed colors (red and black) to show that the quaternary is formed by the opposition, two by two, of two primordial forces, one active: red, the other passive: black.

Here is the geometric summary of this way of considering the quaternary:

In summary, the second method of explanation consists in opposing the top of the figure with the bottom, the right with the left, so as to draw from it the clarifications necessary for the explanation.

It is rare that the meaning of a figure, however mysterious it may be,

971

fails to appear when one combines the first method (separation of elements) with this one.

All these considerations on the explanation of figures may perhaps seem quite futile to some readers; but let them reflect that ancient science resides almost entirely in pantacles, and then no doubt they will excuse the monotony of these developments.

Do we not find the application of this data again in the way of writing the three primitive languages: Chinese — Hebrew — Sanskrit 1?

Chinese is written from top to bottom, that is to say vertically, and from right to left.

Hebrew, horizontally and from right to left.

Sanskrit, horizontally and from left to right.

According to Saint-Yves d'Alveydre 2, the direction of writing would indicate the origin of a people's instruction. If we apply this to the preceding scripts, we shall find that:

All peoples who write as the Chinese do, that is to say from Heaven to Earth 3, have an origin touching very closely upon the primitive source. (The Chinese are the only ones who still possess an ideographic script.)

All peoples who write as the Hebrews do, from East to West, have received their instruction from an Eastern source.

Finally, all peoples who write as Sanskrit does, from West to East, hold their knowledge from the primitive metropolitan sanctuaries of the West, and especially from the Druids.

According to this, one might regard Chinese as a primitive root which, having come from heaven, would give as offshoots Hebrew or Sanskrit, according to whether it is taken as active or passive, as Eastern or Western. All this may be summarized in the following arrangements:

1. See the works of Fabre d'Olivet on the Hebrew language.

2. Mission des Juifs.

3. Moreau de Dammartin, in his Traité sur l'Origine des Caractères alphabétiques (Paris, 1839), demonstrates that the Chinese characters are derived from the configuration of the celestial signs.

THE SCIENCE TO WHICH THE PANTACLE IS RELATED

It is an important point to have decomposed a figure into its elements, to have found the meaning of these elements by the method of oppositions; but there the seeker's work must not stop.

Suppose he has succeeded in relating to the seven planets seven elements from a difficult analysis; is he entitled to be satisfied?
