1It is thanks to the discovery of a few of its properties that we have been able to give the complete explanation of the Tarot2, an explanation that had never been given until now. Here is how we analyze this divine name: THE KABBALISTIC WORD [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: HliT] (iod-hé-vau-hé). If one is to believe the ancient oral tradition of the Hebrews, or Kabbalah, there exists a sacred word which gives, to the mortal who discovers its true pronunciation, the key to all the divine and 1. H. C. Agrippa, Philosophie occulte, t. II, p. 36 et suiv. 2. See the meaning of the letters previously given. — 499 — human sciences. This word, which the Israelites never pronounce, and which the high priest spoke once a year amid the cries of the profane people, is the one found at the summit of every initiation, the one that radiates at the center of the blazing triangle at the 33rd degree of Scottish Freemasonry, the one that spreads above the portal of our old cathedrals; it is formed of four Hebrew letters and is read iod-hé-vau-hé [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: niHL]. It serves, in the Sepher Bereschit or Genesis of Moses, to designate the divinity, and its grammatical construction is such that it recalls, by its very constitution1, the attributes men have always delighted in giving to God.
2Now, we shall see that the powers attributed to this word are, up to a certain point, real, since it easily opens the symbolic door of the ark containing the exposition of the whole of ancient science. It is thus indispensable for us to go into some detail on this subject. This word is formed of four letters, iod (>) hé (n) vau pj hé (n). This last letter, hé, is repeated twice. To each letter of the Hebrew alphabet a number is assigned. Let us see those of the letters that concern us at this moment. y (a scanning misread of "iod") The hé = 10 H (a scanning misread of "hé") The hé = 5 1 (a scanning misread of "vau") The vau = 6 The total numerical value of the word [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: n"!T] is thus i 0 (a scanning misread of the numeral) — {— 5 — j— 6 — j— S (a scanning misread of the numeral) = 26 Let us consider each of the letters separately. 1. "This name offers, first of all, the indicative sign of life, doubled, forming the essentially living root EE ([Hebrew, OCR-garbled: Hn]). This root is never used as a name, and it is the only one that enjoys this prerogative. It is, from its very formation, not only a verb, but a unique verb of which all the others are but derivatives: in a word, the verb [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: ni] (EVE), to-be-being. Here, as one sees, and as I have taken care to explain in my grammar, the sign of intelligible light 1 (a scanning misread of "iod") (Vô) is in the middle of the root of life. Moses, taking this verb par excellence to form from it the proper name of the Being of beings, adds to it the sign of
3the potential manifestation and of eternity * (I), and obtains [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: HirV] (IEVE), in which the facultative being finds itself placed between a past without origin and a future without end. This admirable name thus signifies exactly the Being-who-is-who-was-and-who-shall-be." (Fabre d'Olivet, Langue hébraïque restituée.) 500 — THE 10D The iod, figured by a comma, or else by a point, represents the principle of things. All the letters of the Hebrew alphabet are but combinations resulting from different arrangements of the letter iod1. The synthetic study of nature had led the ancients to think that only a single law directed natural productions. This law, the basis of analogy, posited the unity-principle at the origin of things, and considered these latter only as reflections, in various degrees, of this unity-principle. Thus the iod, alone forming all the letters and consequently all the words and all the sentences of the alphabet, was precisely the image and the representation of this Unity-Principle, whose knowledge was veiled from the profane. Thus the law that presided over the creation of the language of the Hebrews is the same as that which presided over the creation of the universe, and to know the one is implicitly to know the other. This is what one of the oldest books of the Kabbalah tends to demonstrate: the Sepher Jesirah2.
