CHAPITRE XVIII

CHAPTER XVIII

THE VISIBLE AND THE INVISIBLE IN MAN

On the point of undertaking the last part of our work, it seems useful to us to cast a rapid glance over the road traveled.

Having established, through numerous and easily verifiable citations, the existence of a real science in antiquity, having said a few words about the method employed and its applications, we have sketched the most general doctrines of this science concerning the Universe, the Planets, the Races and Man himself.

Embryology and Physiology have furnished us the elements for important deductions on Birth and on Death, on the Soul and its origin, its earthly state and its evolution.

It is then that, penetrating further into the depths of these mysteries of Egypt, we found there a sacred language, common to all the initiates, a language of which the Hebrew of Moses seems to be one of the purest derivatives, if not the total reproduction.

We have followed the various phases through which the transmission of the initiatory tradition passed, from Moses on the one hand, arriving, through the Essenes, at Christianity,

— 792 —

from Orpheus, on the other hand, arriving, through the mysteries of Egypt, at the Gnosis.

Hermetic Philosophy, the Templars, the Rose-Croix and Freemasonry have allowed us to follow the trace of this initiatory tradition down to our own day, when it seemed forever lost, when the gigantic labors of Bailly, of Court de Gébelin, of Fabre d'Olivet and of a host of others came to give an entirely new impetus to the mysterious doctrine of the ancient Trismegistus University.
