1. Voy. 1Before going further, let us illuminate by an example this definition we have just given of the iod. The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, aleph [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: hQ], is formed of four iods opposed two by two. It is the same for all the others. The numerical value of the iod leads to further considerations. The Unity-Principle, according to the doctrine of the kabbalists, is also the Unity-End of beings and of things, and eternity is, from this point of view, only an eternal present. Thus the ancient symbolists represented this idea by a point at the center of a circle, a representation 1. See the Kabbala Denudata. 2. Translated into French recently for the first time. (Available from the publisher Carré.) — 501 — of the Unity-Principle (the point) at the center of eternity (the circle, a line without beginning or end1). According to this data, Unity is regarded as the sum of which all created beings are only the constituent parts; just as Unity-Man is formed of the sum of millions of cells that constitute this being. At the origin of all things, the Kabbalah thus posits the absolute affirmation of being by itself, of the Self-Unity whose representation is the iod symbolically, and the number 10 numerically. This number 10, representing the Principle-All, 1, allied to the Nothingness-Naught, 0, answers well to the required conditions2. THE HÉ
2But the Self can only be conceived through its opposition with the Non-Self. No sooner is the affirmation of the Self established than one must at once conceive a reaction of the Absolute-Self upon itself, from which the notion of its existence will be drawn, by a kind of division of Unity. Such is the origin of duality, of opposition, of the Binary, image of femininity, just as unity is the image of masculinity. Ten dividing itself to oppose itself thus equals 10 — = o, five, the exact number of the letter Hé, second letter of the great sacred name. The Hé will thus represent the passive in relation to the iod, which will symbolize the active; the non-self in relation to the self; woman in relation to man; substance in relation to essence; life in relation to the soul, etc., etc. THE VAU But the opposition of the Self and the Non-Self immediately gives rise to another factor, which is the Relation existing between this Self and this Non-Self. Now, the Vau, the 6th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, produced by 10 1. See Kircher, Œdipus Ægyptiacus; Lenain, la Science kabbalistique; J. Dee, Monas Hieroglyphica. 2. — 502 — (iod) + 5 (hé) = 15 — 6 (or 1 + 5), signifies indeed hook, relation. It is the hook that binds the antagonists throughout the whole of nature, constituting the 3rd term of this mysterious trinity. Self — Non-Self. Relation of the Self with the Non-Self. the 2nd HÉ
3Beyond the Trinity considered as a law, nothing further exists. The Trinity is the synthetic and absolute formula to which all the sciences ultimately lead, and this formula, forgotten as to its scientific value, has been transmitted to us in its entirety by all religions, unconscious depositaries of the Wisdom Science of the primitive civilizations1. Thus only three letters constitute the great sacred name. The fourth term of this name is formed by the second letter, the Hé, repeated once more2. This repetition indicates the passage of the Trinitarian law into a new application; it is, properly speaking, a transition from the metaphysical world to the physical world, or, in general, from any world whatsoever to the world immediately following it3. Knowledge of this property of the second Hé is the key to the entire divine name, in all the applications of which it is susceptible. We shall clearly see the proof of this in what follows4. SUMMARY ON THE WORD IOD-HÉ-VAU-HÉ Knowing separately each of the terms composing the sacred name, let us now synthesize and total up the results obtained. 1.
