3The ideas we have just developed concerning the Science of the Egyptians and its almost total transmission through the Kabbalah cannot fail to shock most of our contemporaries in the highest degree. This is because we have spoken above all of the esoteric teaching of the sanctuary, of the teaching reserved for the priests, for the doctors of science of the period. Two goals had to be achieved in the transmission of this Egyptian science: 1° To transmit the occult science from generation to generation by means of educated men within each people. Initiation was the means employed for this transmission (this was the esoteric, or inward, method, that of the sanctuary). 38 594 — 2° To transmit at the same time the occult science by means of the uneducated, so that, whatever befell, the tradition could not be annihilated. Religious legends were employed for this purpose (this was the exoteric, or outward, method, that of the crowd). Each of these two channels of transmission has its own particular methods, which it is important to define clearly. Transmission through educated men alone was bound to be chiefly oral, but, when circumstances forced the mysterious teachings to be written down, the choice of characters was made in such a way as to forever repel the profane. Hence the proverbial obscurity of the kabbalistic books.
