On recommence encore l’opération.
L’inilié seul sera donc en étal de saisir le troisième sens (hermétique) des mythes anciens1, tandis que le savant n’y verra que les premier et deuxième sens (physique et naturel, cours du Soleil, Zodiaque, etc.) et le paysan n’en comprendra que le premier sens (histoire du héros). 1 . 1Combine the ferment drawn from gold with the ferment drawn from silver and the mercurial ferment in a very solid egg-shaped glass flask, seal this flask hermetically, and set it to cook in a special furnace called by the alchemists the athanor. The athanor differs from other furnaces only by an arrangement that allows the aforesaid egg to be heated for a very long time and in a particular manner. The colors. It is then (during this cooking) and only then that certain colors appear, upon which all the alchemical histories are based. The matter contained within the egg first turns black; everything seems putrefied; this state is designated by the name of raven's head. Suddenly this black color is succeeded by a brilliant whiteness. This passage from black to white, from darkness to light, is an excellent touchstone for recognizing a symbolic history that deals with alchemy. The matter thus fixed at white serves to transmute impure metals (lead, mercury) into silver. If the fire is continued, this white color is seen to disappear little by little; the matter takes on various tints, from the lower colors of the spectrum (blue, green) up to the higher colors (yellow, orange), and finally arrives at ruby red. The philosopher's stone is then almost complete.
2I say almost complete, for in this state ten grams of philosopher's stone do not transmute more than twenty grams of metal. To perfect the stone, it must be put back into an egg with a little mercury of the philosophers and heating begun again. The operation that had taken a year now requires only three months, and the colors reappear in the same order as the first time. In this state the stone transmutes ten times its weight into gold. The operation is repeated once more. It lasts only a month; the stone transmutes a thousand times its weight of metal. Finally it is done one last time, and one obtains the true, perfect philosopher's stone, which transmutes ten thousand times its weight of metal into pure gold. These operations are designated by the name of multiplication of the stone. 649 — EXPLANATION OF THE ALCHEMICAL TEXTS When one reads an alchemist, one must therefore see which operation he is speaking of: 1° If he speaks of the manufacture of the mercury of the philosophers, in which case he will surely be unintelligible to the uninitiated. 2° If he speaks of the manufacture of the stone properly so called, in which case he will speak clearly. 3° If he speaks of the multiplication, in which case he will be entirely clear. Armed with this information, the reader may open the book of M. Figuier and, if he is not averse to a bit of gentle amusement, read from page 8 to page 52. He will easily decipher the meaning of the symbolic histories that are so obscure to M. Figuier and that lead him to hazard such droll explanations.
3Witness the following story, which he treats as a grimoire (p. 41): "Il faut commencer au soleil couchant [One must begin at sunset], when the Red husband and the White wife unite in the spirit of life, to live in love and in tranquility, in the exact proportion of water and earth. "From the West advance through the darkness toward the North. "Alter and dissolve the husband between winter and spring, change the water into black earth, and rise through the varied colors toward the East, where the full Moon appears; after the purgatory the white and radiant sun appears." (Riplée.) Placement in the egg-shaped flask of the two ferments, active or Red, passive or White. Various degrees of fire. Raven's head, colors of the work. White. In considering a symbolic history one must always seek the hermetic meaning, which was the most hidden and which is almost surely to be found there. Since nature is everywhere identical, the same story that expresses the mysteries of the great work may equally signify the course of the Sun (solar myths) or the life of a fabulous hero. The initiate alone will thus be in a state to grasp the third meaning (hermetic) of the ancient myths1, whereas the scholar will see there only the first and second meanings (physical and natural, course of the Sun, Zodiac, etc.) and the peasant will understand only the first meaning (the hero's story). 1 .
