L’essence de l’âme conçue exotériquement étant de monter, celle de la vie de se répandre horizontalement et celle du corps de descendre, nous allons choisir une nouvelle image analogique qui va nous éclairer sur les transformations de nos divers principes. Un hallon figurera l’âme : car la qualité essentielle de ce hallon est de monter. Un crochet double figurera la vie, enfin un poids de plomb figurera le corps. A l’état ordinaire tous ces principes sont unis ensemble ; la pesanteur du poids matériel (corps) corrige la légèreté du ballon (âme). L'existence du double crochet (vie) maintient les deux opposés dans un équilibre harmonique. — 303 — Voilà ce que montre bien la figure suivante.

Le crochet reliant cette vitalité au principe plus élevé, c’est le corps astral 3 Linga sharira. La portion médiane do crochet double intermédiaire, c’est l'âme animale 4 Kama rupa. Le crochet reliant cette âme animale à la division supérieure, c’est i intelligence 5 Manas. Enfin le filet du ballon, c’est la substance enveloppant immédiatement le principe divin; c’est la spiritualité, l'âme angélique. 6 Buddhi. Le ballon c’est le principe 7 Atma.
3Au moment de la mort le principe intermédiaire : la vie, se partage en deux. Cette division se fait au niveau du quatrième principe : ï instinct , l'âme animale, et la facilité avec laquelle celte division s’opère dépendant de l’attraction ou de l’indifférence de l’homme pour les choses d’ici-bas, explique les souffrances symbolisées par les religions exotériques sous le nom de Purgatoire. L’extrait suivant du chapitre déjà cité ci-dessus montre bien que la déduction nous a naturellement conduit à l’explication d’un des enseignements delà Théosophie : « Par rapport à l’état spirituel de l’homme, immédiatement après la mort, le Bouddhisme ésotérique enseigne que les trois principes inférieurs qui appartiennent au corps extérieur, sont abandonnés et retournent à la Terre d’où ils procèdent et à qui ils appartiennent. 12. This link is effected by the action of the blood corpuscle acting upon the nerve cell. 303 The following figure shows these various relations well. 1 The seven principles of man. Analysis of the Soul (A), of the Life (V), and of the Body (C). One may regard the mediating principle, the life, as terminated by two hooks: an upper one for the soul, a lower one for the body. At the moment of death, the upper hook detaches itself: the soul thereby breaks its relations with the body, and then the life soon does likewise. Then the soul rises toward the higher region (toward the more psychic states), the body returns to the Earth, to the material world, and the life spreads throughout Nature. 30i — The following figure shows these changes very roughly. The essence of the soul, conceived exoterically, being to rise, that of the life to spread horizontally, and that of the body to descend, we shall choose a new analogical image that will shed light on the transformations of our various principles. A balloon will figure the soul: for the essential quality of this balloon is to rise. A double hook will figure the life, and finally a lead weight will figure the body. In the ordinary state, all these principles are united together; the heaviness of the material weight (body) corrects the lightness of the balloon (soul). The existence of the double hook (life) maintains the two opposites in a harmonious equilibrium. — 303 — This is well shown by the following figure.

This is the idea that comes first; but it is false, according to occultism. This idea is false because the intermediate principle, the astral body, splits into two; its upper part remains linked to the soul and rises with it; its lower part remains attached to the body and dissolves with it: what is more, 20 • • — 306 — it aids the body in its dissolution just as it aided it in its construction. If we recall that the seven principles are divisions of these three primordial ones, it will be 11e (a scanning misread of "ne") as easy as can be for us to classify them according to our analogical figure. The lead weight is the body 1 Rupa. The rod linking this weight to the higher principle is vitality 2 Jiva. The hook linking this vitality to the higher principle is the astral body 3 Linga sharira. The middle portion of the intermediate double hook is the animal soul 4 Kama rupa. The hook linking this animal soul to the higher division is the intellect 5 Manas. Finally the balloon's netting is the substance immediately enveloping the divine principle; it is spirituality, the angelic soul. 6 Buddhi. The balloon is the principle 7 Atma.
3At the moment of death the intermediate principle, the life, splits into two. This division takes place at the level of the fourth principle, instinct, the animal soul, and the ease with which this division is effected, depending on the attraction or the indifference of the man for the things of this world below, explains the sufferings symbolized by the exoteric religions under the name of Purgatory. The following extract, from the chapter already cited above, shows clearly that our deduction has naturally led us to the explanation of one of the teachings of Theosophy: 'With regard to the spiritual state of man, immediately after death, esoteric Buddhism teaches that the three lower principles belonging to the outer body are abandoned and return to the Earth from which they proceed and to which they belong.
