« 10. The cornerstone of Magic is a practical and thorough knowledge of Magnetism and of Electricity, of their qualities, of their correlation and of their potentiality. What is especially necessary is to be familiar with their effects in and upon the animal kingdom and man.
« There are occult properties as strange as those of the magnet in many other minerals which practitioners of Magic must know, properties of which so-called exact science is completely ignorant.
« Plants too have, to an astonishing degree, mystical properties, and the secrets of the herbs of dream and of enchantment are lost only to European science, and are unknown to it, except in a few well-marked cases such as opium and hashish. And even the mere psychic effects of these few plants upon the human organism are regarded as evident cases of temporary mental disorder. The women of Thessaly and of Epirus, the women hierophants of the rites of Sabazius, did not carry off their secrets at the fall of

their sanctuary. They are still preserved, and those who know the nature of the Soma also know equally well the properties of the other plants.
« To sum up in a few words, MAGIC is SPIRITUAL WISDOM, Nature is its material handmaid, the pupil and the servant of the Magician. A common vital principle fills all things, and this principle undergoes the domination of the human will pushed to perfection. The adept can stimulate the movements of the natural forces in plants and animals to a supra-natural degree. These actions, far from obstructing the course of Nature, act on the contrary as adjuvants, by furnishing the conditions for a more intense vital action.
« The adept can dominate the sensations and alter the conditions of the physical and astral bodies of other, non-adept persons. He can also govern and employ as he pleases the spirits of the elements 1, but he cannot exercise his action upon the immortal Spirit of any human being, living or dead, for these spirits are, in equal degree, sparks of the divine essence, and are subject to no foreign domination. »
This remarkable passage sheds great light on the secret of magical practices as well as on the phenomena obtained in our own day by the spiritists. It is, however, curious to seek out the origin of these theories concerning the intermediaries between man and the invisible; and so I shall again have recourse to Fabre d'Olivet:
« As Pythagoras designated God by 1 and matter by 2, he expressed the Universe by the number 12, which results from the union of the two others. This number

was formed by the multiplication of 3 by 4, that is to say that this philosopher conceived of the universal World as composed of three particular worlds, which, linking one to another by means of four elemental modifications, developed into twelve concentric spheres.
The ineffable Being who filled these twelve spheres, without being grasped by any of them, was GOD. Pythagoras gave him truth for a soul and light for a body. The intelligences that peopled the three worlds were: first, the immortal Gods properly so called; second, the glorified heroes; third, the terrestrial Demons.
« The immortal Gods, direct emanations of the uncreated Being and manifestations of his infinite faculties, were so named because they could never fall into forgetfulness of their Father, nor wander in the darkness of ignorance and impiety; whereas the souls of men, which produced, according to their degree of purity, the glorified heroes and the terrestrial demons, could sometimes die to the divine life through their voluntary estrangement from God; for the death of the intellectual essence was, according to Pythagoras — imitated in this by Plato — nothing but ignorance and impiety.
