1Finally, the action of these special forces upon the animal kingdom gives rise to the psychic powers — instinct, intelligence, idea — which form, just below the soul, the most sublimated portion of life. The Earth had given man vital force; man returns to it, in exchange, intelligence; the Sun had given the Earth light; the Earth sends back to the Sun soul. How does this come about? Claude Bernard demonstrated that every time an idea was produced by man, this meant that a nerve cell had just died. Now, if one recalls that we said each human being was a nerve cell of the Earth, one will understand why, every time a human being dies, the Earth manifests an idea (the soul of that man) — a good idea if the soul is good, a bad one if the soul is bad. Just as the nerve cell of man is a means of transforming air into idea, so likewise man is a means of transforming solar light into soul. We see, then, that if the Spirit incarnates itself in Matter, it is in order to evolve and to rise again, conscious through trial, whereas it had been emanated in a state of unconscious force. — 139 — Summary. We have shown, in all that precedes, two currents: the one, characterized by the descent of Force into Matter, is involution; the other, characterized by the progressive return of Matter into Force, is evolution.
2The mind becomes entangled in all these words of force and of matter, of involution and of evolution; and so an example is absolutely necessary to clarify all this. If it is true that this is a general law, it must, according to analogy, be found again, in reduction, everywhere. We shall see that this is indeed so. Let us take, for example, a log, any piece of wood, and reason out its formation. Originally this piece of wood was a germ in a seed. The seed was put into the ground, and soon a fragile stem was born. The purpose of this stem was to bring into contact two elements: the matter drawn from the earth and the force drawn from the sun and its derivatives (air, among others). The function of the plant is thus limited to this: to draw from the earth particular saps, drawn chiefly from minerals; then to combine, within the intimacy of its tissues, these saps with the solar rays. This is how wood is formed. Wood therefore constitutes a piece of sun enclosed within matter (forgive me the imperfection of the image). If we wished to figure all this by a diagram, we would represent the force of the Sun, by its threefold specialization Heat-Light-Electricity, on a straight line. Heat Light Electricity i 1 1 We would represent the action of this force on a 140 — tree by a material point of concentration, at which these forces would come to be reunited.
3According to this figure, our log therefore contains within it force stored up. That is involution, the descent of force into matter. Is all this true? The experiment Let us subject our piece of wood to a condenser of very great force, so as to release the solar rays enclosed within it: let us light our log. At once a most curious phenomenon, for the observer, takes place. Heat, light, electricity come into being and reunite in a wholly spiritual principle: the flame. The following figure shows us the various phases of the phenomenon. the opposite is about to show you. — 141 The flame is, in miniature, the image of the Sun; it is the Sun, once enclosed, returning to its source. If we set the two figures side by side, we shall see that the first represents the way in which the Sun becomes Matter, the second the way in which Matter becomes Sun. If we unite together the figure of the materialization of Spirit and that of the spiritualization of Matter, we shall obtain the following image: We can sum up the whole even better in a single figure, which will have the advantage of representing the two Heat The descending arrows indicate the first current (descent of the Sun into the Wood); the ascending arrows indicate the second (return of the Wood into the Sun). ★ ¥ ¥
