1M. Franck, interpreting the Kabbalists, also says: "Although all equally necessary, the attributes and distinctions that the Sephiroth express cannot make us understand the divine nature to the same height; but they represent it to us under various aspects which, in the language of the Kabbalists, are called faces or persons1." But it is Kircher who is going to enlighten us completely by showing us, in a single sentence, the origin of the modern works on the unity of the force spread throughout the Universe, works pursued with such fruit by Louis Lucas2; let us listen to our author: "This is why all the Sephiroth, or Numbers, are one and the same force modified differently according to the media it traverses 3." » Soon the divine substance will, through new modifications, give birth to conceptions still unknown, manifested by the twenty-two letters. Here the great laws that govern nature will appear one by one in the analogical applications that the author of the Sepher employs in speaking of the Universe, of the year, and of man. The first distinction appears in the ternary division of the letters, which are divided into mothers, doubles (expressing two sounds, one positive, strong, and the other negative, soft) and simples (expressing only one sound).
2This idea of the Trinity is found everywhere in the Sepher. It is especially well developed in chapter iii, where its constitution is shown; a positive (t£T) S, Fire; a negative, Water (Q) M; and finally a neutral, Air A, intermediate between the two and resulting from their reciprocal action. Let us consider each Trinity as a single person, and we shall see appear a positive Trinity, a negative Trinity, and the Unity which reconciles them within the Septenary, as the text says: "Seven parts are constituted by two Ternaries, in the midst of which stands unity." Likewise the duodenary is formed of four ternaries opposed two by two. Within these few figures, however, are contained all the 1. Franck, la Kabbale. 2. See l'Occultisme contemporain, by Papus (published by Carré). 3. Kircher, Œdipus Ægyptiacus (Cabala Hebræorum, § 1 1). — 581 laws that Occult Science regards as the primordial laws, the whys of Nature. And this is so true that the author closes his book by synthesizing in a single sentence the laws he had previously analyzed. 1 Alongside this evolution, proceeding from the Divinity to spread itself through creation — an evolution whose idea is, on the whole, fairly clear — there appear, here and there, obscure passages whose meaning relates to the divinatory, and consequently occult, practices of the sanctuary.
3A few letters of the alphabet suffice to express a countless number of ideas, and this simply through their combination. Thus here are three letters, N, M, and O, which will express an entirely different idea depending on whether one writes them NOM or MON. It is to these combinations of letters, and consequently of numbers and ideas, that the two hundred and thirty-one gates at the end of chapter ii, and the houses of chapter iv, relate. The two hundred and thirty-one gates are connected with the practice of a table called Ziruph in the Kabbalah, and indicating all the words that the twenty-two letters can form when substituted one for another. But, in the case that concerns us, here is Guillaume Postel's explanation: Multiply the twenty-two letters by the eleven numbers (the ten Sephiroth + the ineffable), and you will obtain two hundred and forty-two, from which you will subtract the numbers, so as to have left only the occult gates, which will give you 242 — 11 = 231 gates. The table of substitutions serves to replace the first letter of the alphabet with the last, the second with the second-to-last, and so on. Let us take an example from French, the alphabet: ABCDEFGHIJKLMN OPQR S T U V X Y Z becomes: ZYXVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA, so that to write ART one would write, reading the alphabet placed below it, ZHF. This method, combined with the following one, is of great help for the practical use of Guillaume Postel's Rota1.
