1Voilà donc trois domaines distincts : le domaine du corps; le domaine de la vie exerçant son action au moyen d’une série de conducteurs spéciaux (le grand sympathique, les nerfs vaso-moteurs) et localisée dans le globule sanguin ; le domaine de la volonté agissant par des conducteurs spéciaux (nerfs volontaires) et n’ayant pas d’influence sur les organes essentiels à l’entretien de la vie. Nous pouvons, avant d’aller plus loin, voir l’utilité de la méthode analogique pour éclairer certains points obscurs, et voici comment ; Si une chose quelconque est analogue à une autre, toutes les parties dont cette chose est composée sont analogues aux parties correspondantes de l’autre. Ainsi les anciens avaient établi que l’homme était analogue à l’Univers. Ils appelaient pour cette raison l’homme microcosme (petit monde) et l’Univers macrocosme (grand monde). 11 s’ensuit que, pour connaître la circulation de la vie dans l’Univers, il suffit d’étudier la circulation vitale chez l’homme ; et réciproquement, pour connaître les détails de la naissance, de l’accroissement et de la mort d’un homme, il faut étudier les mêmes phénomènes dans un monde. Tout ceci paraîtra bien mystique à quelques-uns, bien obscur à quelques autres ; aussi je les prie de prendre patience et de se reporter au chapitre suivant où ils trouveront toutes les explications nécessaires à ce sujet.
2L'idée des trois mondes reparaît trop souvent dans les auteurs d’occultisme pour ne point mériter un aperçu spécial. 6 — 82 — Qu’en tend-on par ces trois mondes? Quels sont-ils? On désigne sous ce nom de mondes trois plans particuliers, trois états spéciaux d’existence et non pas trois endroits. Il y a trois de ces mondes ou états : 1° Le monde physique; 2° Le monde astral; 3° Le monde intellectuel. Un exemple bien grossier, mais assez suggestif, est celui de l’eau. A l’état de glace , alors qu’elle est solide, l’eau représente bien le monde physique. Augmentez la puissance de la force emprisonnée dans cette glace en chauffant un peu et vous allez voir Y état changer. L’eau se liquéfie, ses conditions d'existence changent. Le morceau de glace se tenait tout seul où vous le placiez et avait une forme à lui, tandis que maintenant - l’eau liquide a besoin d'un vasè pour la contenir et prend la forme de ce vase. Chauffez encore et l’état va changer; l’eau, tout à l’heure encore visible, va devenir invisible sous forme de vapeur et va s’élever dans les airs. Cette image est grossière, mais elle met en garde contre une erreur qui empêche beaucoup de lecteurs de comprendre la Science occulte : la croyance que les mondes sont des endroits. Ainsi à la mort, l’homme passe dans le plan astral, dans le monde astral.
3Cela ne veut pas dire qu’il change pour cela de lieu. Comme l’eau tout à l’heure, en passant de l’état solide à l’état liquide, changeait très peu de place, de même Uliomme, en passant « en astral », change à' état. Ses con- — 83 — ditions d’existence varient, voilà tout. Il en sera de même quand il passera plus tard dans le monde intellectuel. A ces états particuliers correspondent bien des domaines délimités; mais ces domaines sont inclus en partie les uns dans les autres comme nous voyons chez l’homme le sang, dont le centre se trouve dans la poitrine, circuler dans tout l’organisme. Il en est de même de la Lymphe qui correspond au Ventre et de la Force nerveuse correspondant à la Tête. Chacun de ces centres (Ventre, Poitrine, Tête) a bien ses actions propres, mais il subit quand même l’influence des deux autres. Voici deux extraits développant quelques-uns des principes dérivant de cette idée des trois mondes : « Celte application (du nombre 12) à l’Univers n’était point une invention arbitraire de Pvlhagore, elle était commune aux Chaldéens, aux Égyptiens, de qui il l’avait reçue, et aux principaux peuples de la Terre : elle avait donné lieu à l’institution du zodiaque dont la division en douze astérismes a été trouvée partout existante de temps immémorial.

1Here, then, are three distinct domains: the domain of the body; the domain of life, exercising its action by means of a series of special conductors (the great sympathetic nerve, the vaso-motor nerves) and localized in the blood corpuscle; the domain of the will, acting through special conductors (voluntary nerves) and having no influence over the organs essential to the maintenance of life. Before going further, we can see the usefulness of the analogical method in shedding light on certain obscure points, and here is how: If any given thing is analogous to another, all the parts of which this thing is composed are analogous to the corresponding parts of the other. Thus the ancients had established that man was analogous to the Universe. For this reason they called man the microcosm (small world) and the Universe the macrocosm (great world). 11 (a scanning misread of "Il," French for "It") follows that, to know the circulation of life in the Universe, it suffices to study the vital circulation in man; and reciprocally, to know the details of the birth, growth, and death of a man, one must study the same phenomena in a world. All this will seem quite mystical to some, quite obscure to others; and so I beg them to be patient and to refer to the following chapter, where they will find all the explanations necessary on this subject.
2The idea of the three worlds recurs too often in writers on occultism to fail to deserve special attention. 6 — 82 — What is meant by these three worlds? What are they? By this name of worlds are designated three particular planes, three special states of existence, and not three places. There are three of these worlds, or states: 1° The physical world; 2° The astral world; 3° The intellectual world. A rather crude example, but a fairly suggestive one, is that of water. In the state of ice, when it is solid, water well represents the physical world. Increase the power of the force imprisoned in this ice by heating it a little, and you will see the state change. The water liquefies, its conditions of existence change. The block of ice stood by itself wherever you placed it, and had a shape of its own, whereas now the liquid water needs a vessel to contain it, and takes the shape of that vessel. Heat it further and the state will change again; the water, visible just a moment ago, will become invisible in the form of vapor, and will rise into the air. This image is a crude one, but it guards against an error that keeps many readers from understanding Occult Science: the belief that the worlds are places. Thus at death, man passes into the astral plane, into the astral world.
3This does not mean that he thereby changes place. Just as water, a moment ago, in passing from the solid state to the liquid state, changed its place very little, so man, in passing 'into the astral,' changes state. His — 83 — conditions of existence vary — that is all. It will be the same when he later passes into the intellectual world. To these particular states correspond well-defined domains; but these domains are partly included one within another, just as we see, in man, the blood, whose center is in the chest, circulate throughout the whole organism. It is the same with the Lymph, which corresponds to the Belly, and with the nervous Force, corresponding to the Head. Each of these centers (Belly, Chest, Head) has indeed its own actions, but it nonetheless undergoes the influence of the other two. Here are two extracts developing some of the principles derived from this idea of the three worlds: 'This application (of the number 12) to the Universe was not an arbitrary invention of Pythagoras; it was common to the Chaldeans, to the Egyptians, from whom he had received it, and to the principal peoples of the Earth: it had given rise to the institution of the zodiac, whose division into twelve asterisms has been found existing everywhere from time immemorial.
