« 2. La nature est tri-une 1 :

« 1° Nature visible, objective;

« 2° Nature invisible, occulte, naturante, modèle exact et principe vital de l’autre ;

« 3. L’homme est aussi tri-un :

« 1° Le corps physique, l’homme objectif;

« 2° Le corps astral, vitalisant ou âme, c’est l’homme réel ;

Another CURIOUS note written around 1823.

b 6 Directing circles, or Illuminati properly so called. It is understood that in this regard very little leaks out to the public. Perhaps one could rank here, at least in part, the initiated Brothers of Asia, but it is more probable that they still belong to the Strict Observance, considering especially their inclination toward mysticity, which renders them ill-suited to this higher direction.

b 1 Final or systematic identity between the trials and the secrets, or between the visible world and the invisible world; mystical realization of the absolute in the absolute; potential affiliation: the invisibles, or terrestrial spirits.

Note. — Only once did these Invisibles show themselves to men. That was at the time of the dreadful secret tribunal (Heimlicher Act).

These terrestrial spirits do not appear today, but it is they who govern all secret societies; and in this committee, the ancient book of blood always remains open.

The relations of the invisible to the visible had been extended to their fullest limits, so that the chain was known by which any object, whatever it might be, traced back to the intelligence to which it owed its form. Hence the use of certain objects, of certain characters, to fix the will in magical operations.

These objects served only to form a fulcrum upon which the adept's will could lean, so as to act like a powerful magnet upon universal force. An adept cannot produce an effect against nature, a miracle, for the good reason that such a thing does not exist.

« 1. There are no miracles; everything that happens is the result of the eternal, immutable, always active LAW. The apparent miracle is only the operation of forces antagonistic to what Dr. B. Carpenter (member of the Royal Society), a man of great knowledge but little wisdom, calls the well-demonstrated laws of nature. Like many of his colleagues, Dr. Carpenter is ignorant of one fact, that there may be Laws once known and now unknown to science.

« 2. Nature is tri-une 1:

« 1° Visible, objective Nature;

« 2° Invisible, occult, naturing Nature, the exact model and vital principle of the other;

« 3° Above these two is Spirit, source of all forces, eternal and indestructible.

« The lower natures change constantly; the highest never.

« 3. Man too is tri-une:

« 1° The physical body, objective man;

« 2° The astral body, vitalizing, or soul — this is real man;

« 3° These two are given tone and illumined by the third, the immortal Spirit.

« When real man succeeds in merging into this latter, he becomes an immortal intensity.

« 4. Magic, considered as a science, is the knowledge of these principles and of the way by which

1. The ternary division is the basis of all esotericism. This ternary, however, reaches its full development in the Septenary (Papus).

— 932 —

the omniscience and the omnipotence of the Spirit, and its control over the forces of Nature, can be acquired by the individual while still in the body.

« Considered as an art, Magic is the application of this knowledge to practice.

« 5. The knowledge of the arcana, misapplied, constitutes sorcery; put to use with the idea of GOOD, it constitutes true Magic, or Wisdom.

« 6. The medium is the opposite of the adept. The medium is the passive instrument of foreign influences; the adept actively exercises his power over himself and over all the lower powers.

« 7. Everything that is, that was, or that will be, being stereotyped in the astral light, the tablet of the invisible universe, the initiated adept, by using the vision of his own spirit, can know everything that has been known and everything that will be.
