1Puis le temps passe encore. Le tournant de la Vieillesse arrive, tournant difficile à franchir, car il jette définitivement l’homme dans le gouffre qu’ont creusé ses vices, et alors l’égoïsme, l’envie et l’avarice se montrent, « ou la monade humaine est sauvée pour longtemps ». Les Sens sont endormis, mais le cœur vibre plus que jamais aux nobles sentiments ; la faculté de comprendre la Nature et les Sciences, /’ Intellect ualité, s’est développée en même temps que prend naissance une des facultés les plus élevées que puisse évoluer la race humaine dans le temps actuel : la Spiritualité , grâce à laquelle l’homme, perdant pour un instant conscience de son individualité, est susceptible de se laisser sacrifier consciemment pour le développement moral de ses semblables. Après arrive la mort, à la suite de laquelle se continue l’évolution. Dans des cas exceptionnels l’homme peut, de par sa Volonté toute puissante, pousser plus loin ce développement durant la Vie. C’est ainsi que prend naissance une faculté à peine en germe dans l’humanité actuelle, la Sainteté. Cet état hypernaturel (je n’ose employer le mol — 172 surnaturel ) se produit dans des cas d’ascétisme exceptionnels.
2Enfin j’ose à peine parler, vu sa rareté, de l’état appelé par les Indous état de Nirvana , état dans lequel la Spiritualité, poussée à son apogée, développe au plus haut point la Sainteté, de telle façon que la fusion de la monade humaine dans la monade divine est presque accomplie. Les tableaux suivants indiquent et résument toutes ces phases. Les chiffres qui suivent les principes énumérés dans les derniers de ces tableaux se rapportent aux théories ésotériques sur la constitution de l’homme, théories qu’il nous faut maintenant passer en revue 1 . 1Then time passes further still. The turning point of Old Age arrives, a difficult turn to make, for it casts man definitively into the abyss dug by his vices, and then selfishness, envy, and avarice show themselves — 'or the human monad is saved for a long time.' The Senses are lulled to sleep, but the heart vibrates more than ever to noble sentiments; the faculty of understanding Nature and the Sciences, Intellectuality, has developed, at the same time that there arises one of the highest faculties the human race is capable of evolving at the present time: Spirituality, thanks to which man, losing for an instant consciousness of his individuality, is capable of allowing himself to be sacrificed consciously for the moral development of his fellow men. After this comes death, following which evolution continues. In exceptional cases man can, through his all-powerful Will, push this development further during Life itself. Thus arises a faculty scarcely in germ within present-day humanity: Holiness. This hypernatural state (I dare not use the word — 172 supernatural) occurs in cases of exceptional asceticism.
2Finally I scarcely dare speak, given its rarity, of the state called by the Hindus the state of Nirvana — a state in which Spirituality, pushed to its apogee, develops Holiness to the highest degree, in such a way that the fusion of the human monad into the divine monad is almost accomplished. The following tables indicate and sum up all these phases. Let us now study its evolution. This emanation universally follows three phases of development: In a first phase, the passive will prevail over the active, and the result will be a passivity, a materialization, a moving away from Unity toward Multiplicity \ In a second phase, the active and the passive will come into balance; hierarchy, series, will appear; the inferior will gravitate around the superior term.
