In the Gospel, the miracles of Jesus Christ are designated only under the name of signs, as announcing his divine mission, and the coming event.

From this have come certain customs, which employ signs whose virtue is to announce the consummation of an act, of a resolution.

Thus, among the Hebrews, the owner would take off a shoe from one foot, before witnesses, when he consented to sell his house or his land. Formerly, the two ends of a straw were knotted to show that the matter was concluded, and the straw was attached to the written deed. When a woman renounced the community of goods, she placed the keys of the house upon her husband's grave. Even today, when one takes an oath, one raises the right hand (the hand of justice). In certain provinces, so long as the contracting parties have not struck hands with one another, nothing is settled: after the resounding clasp, everything is finished; there is no way of going back on it.

It is easy to see, from everything that has just been related, that the name "symbol" always awakens the idea of a metaphorical meaning; and that imitation, in antiquity, was not merely, as the scholars think, the relation of the type to the copy (of this latter nothing was said, and it was always understood); but further the relation of the symbol to the thing signified, bearing the same name. It is thus always the name of the symbol, common to all the ideas it designates, that the symbol naturally reproduces; leaving it then to the mind to find the precise meaning within the circumstances of the sentence in which the symbol is placed. Thus, in Chinese, words and characters have numerous meanings; in Sanskrit, words have a great number of different senses; Horapollo proves to us that the hieroglyphic symbols had very numerous meanings; finally, the curious example I have given of the application of symbolism to the sacred language shows that the same name, represented by the same sign, had very diverse values. Thus, we have seen that the reed, arnrès, designated the hierogrammatist, food, science, bread, the baker, the end, illness, the reed cord, the harbor, the anchor, contentment, etc.; and we have recognized that a part of these values has remained in modern Coptic.

s ±. — ON TABLES OF ANALOGY AND THEIR CONSTRUCTION

In the methods employed by the initiate to express his ideas, we have never so far seen the general form of exposition undergo the slightest change. The value of the signs employed varies; but there the whole method stops.

What is to be done, so as to develop, in a harmonious whole, the relations that exist among the subjects treated?

We shall frequently see, in going through an occult treatise, phrases of the kind:

The eagle relates to the air,

a phrase incomprehensible unless one finds the key to it.

This key lies entirely in a method of exposition established according to the general method of Occult Science: analogy.

This method consists in expressing ideas in such a way that the observer can grasp at a glance the relation that exists between the Law, the fact, and the principle of an observed phenomenon.

Thus, a fact being given, you can at once discover

053 —

the law that governs it and the relation that exists between this law and a host of other facts.

Since two things (FACTS) analogous to one and the same third thing (LAW) are analogous to one another, you determine the relation that exists between the observed fact and any one of the other phenomena.

This method, as can be seen, analyzes and illuminates symbolic histories; and so it was employed only in the temples, and between pupil and master. It was based on the construction of tables arranged in a certain way.

To discover the key to the system, let us try to reconstitute it entirely.

Having read a symbolic history, I discovered that it contained three meanings.
