1that the word athyri was compound, and meant, taken as a whole, house of Horus. Accordingly, they set about analyzing it thus: ath, house (this word does not have that meaning in Coptic), and yr or or, Horus; ath-or, house of Horus. Strong in this opinion, which circulates everywhere, M. Champollion, having found somewhere a long square enclosing a small bird, judged that the long square was the house, and the small bird, Horus; and out of all this he made the ideographic symbol of Athyr or Athor, Venus or Isis. As many words, so many errors. 11 (a scanning misread of "Il," French for "It") must be understood that in astrology, the signs of the zodiac, which apply to the months, are what are called the houses of the planets. The sign of Virgo, to which corresponds the month of athyr, or of Venus, is one of the two houses or domiciles of the planet Mercury-Apollo, named Horus or Orion, who took from it the surname of Athyr or Athor; thus Athyri, or Virgo, is truly the cosmic house of Horus. (See the Etymologicum magnum under the word Athyr.) "Scholars have thus taken the name of the house for its definition; and this, because they did not know what a cosmic house was: it is as if one were to say that the word Tuileries means palace of the king." Can we have more precise details on the sacred language of the Egyptians? Here are certain passages very instructive on this subject.
2Horapollo gives us, concerning this sacred language, certain valuable pieces of information, which confirm everything we have seen above. 11 (a scanning misread of "Il," French for "He") says (book I, 27) that the Egyptian priests designated speech by a tongue and a red eye or a hand; indicating by the tongue the first — 403 — part of a word that contains its pronunciation; and by the eye or the hand, its meaning. From this we see that it is with sacred Egyptian as with Chinese. In this latter language, li is the name given to a pear tree and to a carp; but to determine that one is meant rather than the other, one says mo for the tree, and yu for the fish; li-yu, the fish li, will be the carp; and li-mo, the tree li, will be the pear tree; the English say pear-tree, the tree-pear. This addition was necessary to fix the precise sense that a symbol susceptible of several interpretations was meant to bear1. Thus, in the sacred script, everything had to be pronounced. It is impossible to accept the mute and useless determinatives that M. Champollion presents; and indeed, he attributes any necessity to them only because of the imperfection of the script.
3Why did Saint Clement and Porphyry not speak of the system of the vulgar script, nor of that of the hieratic script? First, as for the vulgar script, it was known to everyone, and there was no need whatsoever to speak of it. As for the hieratic script, it was secret and reserved for the works of the priests; and, since it reproduced the same figures as the hieroglyphic script, it had no system other than that one; it necessarily had to be comprised by Porphyry under the imitative letters... Note well that the tree or fish signs that enter into the Chinese compound characters are purely orthographic, and do not dispense with marking the name and the sign tree or fish, following the species name, when in the sentence as stated some uncertainty may remain as to the meaning of that species name — orthographic signs (the source here reads "orthognphi..10s," a scanning garble) doubtless owe their origin to encyclopedic nomenclatures. Persons unfamiliar with the knowledge of Chinese have always been mistaken about the properties of Chinese writing, in relation to the language it expresses. Thus there circulates in the learned world numerous errors of more than one kind, which, generally accepted as truths, mislead public opinion, and exert upon the study of antiquity a deleterious and baneful influence. — 404 —
