1A worthy clerk is Voltaire reincarnated... minus the spirit. A retired captain is Napoleon returned from Saint Helena, though having since lost the art of getting ahead. Lastly, there is no group in which Marie de Médicis, Madame de Maintenon, Mary Stuart have not come back in the bodies of good, often well-enriched, middle-class ladies, and in which Turenne, Condé, Richelieu, Mazarin, Molière, Jean-Jacques Rousseau do not direct some little séance. There lies the danger, there lies the real cause of spiritism's stationary state these fifty years past; no other reason need be sought than this one, added to the ignorance and sectarianism of the group leaders. As early as 1 853, Eliphas Lévi had set down certain practices for the evocation of the dead, and had even performed an experiment showing how, by applying the data of magic, and by uniting oneself, through prolonged study, with the work of a great man, one could call upon him, or rather upon his astral image. This brings me to say what is meant in occultism by an astral image. It is curious to know what principles manifest themselves in a séance of necromancy, when the deceased himself answers the evocation. According to the doctrine of the three constituent principles of the human being, here is what occurs: The attraction exerted by the evoker acts upon the body
2astral body of the one evoked, and the communication takes place through the fusion of the plastic mediator of the subject serving as medium with the astral body of the evoked spirit, or rather with the portion of the astral body that still surrounds the soul after death (see the preceding chapter). The phenomenon, considered from this general point of view, is indeed the soul, the deceased's higher principle, that manifests itself. The spiritists, taking account only of very general data, are therefore right to maintain that it is indeed the soul of the deceased that comes to answer the call of a relative or a friend. When the theories of Occult Science, until then kept secret, began to become known to the general 344 — public and to make numerous converts, the spiritists were greatly scandalized to learn that man's higher principles (the spiritual soul and the divine soul) have nothing to do with communications between the living and the dead. Such abstract data, set forth before the adherents of an altogether elementary philosophy, produced exactly the effect of a book by Kant or Leibniz read before the pupils of a primary school. The first accusation leveled against Occult Science is that of being "far too difficult to understand and far too complicated for the ordinary readers of spiritist books."
3Another objection runs as follows: "The occultists dare to claim that the human being splits into several entities after death, and that what comes to communicate is not the whole being, but a fragment of the being — an astral shell!" To properly clarify this question and to avoid any misunderstanding, a little reflection will suffice. Of how many principles is man constituted, according to spiritism? Of three: The Body, the Perispirit, and the Soul. Where are these principles lodged? In the three segments of the organism: Belly, Chest, Head. Search through all of Allan Kardec, go through the works of every spiritist philosopher, and nowhere will you find mention that there exist, outside of man, principles not yet incarnate. — 345 — If one wished to represent the constitution of man according to spiritism, one would do it thus: The figure placed beside that one shows, on the contrary, the origin of this discussion based on a misunderstanding. The 6th and the 7th principle, not being incarnate in man, form no part of his self; they constitute what is called the higher unconscious, the self being contained in the 4th and the 5th principle, corresponding exactly to what a spiritist calls a spirit. After death each of these groups evolves in a — 346
