1It is, then, of the greatest importance, in order to avoid all confusion, not to enumerate names one after another; but to distinguish clearly the central current from these accessory currents, important though they otherwise are. Thus Raymond Lulle (1235-1315), initiated by the Arabs into the secrets of the book of Hermès-Tau (the Tarot), teaches his Ars magna, or the art of replacing the human brain with a mathematical machine, an art that would form the basis of university teaching for four centuries. Thus Paracelse (1495-1541) would return from his travels enriched with new light. But two men interest us above all from this point of view: those who went to draw the pure gnostic tradition from its very source, and who created serious currents of initiative under this influence. These two men are Hugues de Payens, the founder of the Order of the Temple in the xne century, and Rosenkreuz, the founder of the Order of the Rose-Croix in the xive century. The hermetic current did indeed possess the kabbalistic tradition allied with the Gnosis, as the works of Jean Dée prove; but the occupation of the philosophers is entirely intellectual — none of them dreams of any social realization that would allow them to fight on equal terms against the ignorant usurper of spiritual power: the Church.
2The Templars. — The seven crusaders who founded the Order of the Temple, initiated in Palestine itself into the secrets of the Gnosis, laid the foundations in 1418 of the Power that nearly realized, from as early as the xive century, the secret aspirations of the initiates. The Templars wished to reestablish the ancient university organization of antiquity. In every important center a commandery was established; several commanderies were governed by a priory; several priories grouped themselves under the orders of a t. — 085 — grand priory governing the Province. The grand priories in turn grouped themselves by nation, speaking a different language, and the whole was governed by the central power, having at its head the Grand Master. Thus peoples speaking diverse tongues received intellectual impulse from a single center, and the aim of this impulse was not the a priori obscuring of minds; but rather their emancipation through charity and through science, the two pivots of the Order of the Temple. This was a direct attack upon the Church and upon the Papacy; the latter sensed the danger and employed a radical means. Le 13 octobre 1307 Philippe le Bel arrested the Templars throughout the entire territory and had them burned after a summary trial. En 1312 the pope Clément V destroyed the order administratively.
3The Gnosis had not, until then, been able to succeed socially, because it had no soul; it was not constituted as a complete being; it did not exist as an efficient power within the invisible. The voluntary martyrdom of Jacques Molay gave to the gnostic current this directing soul that it had lacked; this current suddenly became all-powerful, precisely through its own enemy, and we shall find it again with the Reformation and with the French Revolution. Let us note well the essentially realizing character of the Order of the Temple. After its destruction, several of its initiates who had escaped the ordeal founded the first of the great secret fraternities of Europe — excepting, however, the Sainte Wœhme, which dated from Charlemagne. Chrétien Rosenkreuz, born in 1378, had been raised by a circle of German initiates who knew that great hermetic centers still survived in the lands of the Orient. At scarcely twenty years of age, Rosenkreuz set out, heading straight for the sources of the Gnosis. He traveled successively through Turkey, Palestine, Arabia, having himself received everywhere within the centers of initiation. At Damcar he finally discovered the long-sought center, where he received the final complement of the esoteric Tradition. The young initiate then made his way to Fez, where the Kabbale was taught, and afterward returned by way of Spain to his native land, Germany.
