» (E. Levi, C. des G. M., 207.) 1. 1The Emerald Table opens with a trinity. Hermès thus affirms, from the very first word, the Law that governs the whole of Nature. We know that the Ternary reduces to a hierarchy designated under the name of: the Three Worlds. It is thus one and the same thing, considered under three different aspects, that these words present to us for consideration. This thing is truth, and its threefold manifestation within the Three Worlds: It is true. — Sensible truth corresponding to the physical World. — This is the aspect studied by contemporary Science. Without falsehood. — Opposition of the preceding aspect. Philosophical truth, certainty corresponding to the metaphysical or moral World. Most certain. — Union of the two preceding aspects, the thesis and the antithesis, to constitute the synthesis. — Intelligible truth corresponding to the divine World. — 660 — One can see that the explanation I gave previously of the number Three finds here its striking application. But let us continue: What is above is like and what is below to accomplish the miracles of one thing. By arranging this phrase in this way, we find again first two Ternaries, or rather a single Ternary considered under two aspects, positive and negative: below analogous to above We next find again the application of the method of Occult Science, analogy. — Hermès says that the positive (above) is analogous to the negative (below); he is careful not to say that they are alike.
2Finally we see the constitution of the four by the reduction of the three to unity 1: To accomplish the miracles of one thing. Or of the seven, by the reduction of the six (the two Ternaries) to unity. The four and the seven expressing the same thing 2, one may take with certainty either of the two applications. Let us bring the explanation of the second phrase closer to the explanation of the first, and we shall see: That a Truth must be considered, above all, in its threefold aspect: physical, metaphysical, and spiritual. It is only then that the analogical method can be applied to this knowledge, which will allow the Laws to be learned. Finally, that the multitude of Laws must be reduced to unity through the discovery of the Principle, or of the First Cause. Hermès then takes up the study of the relations of the multiple to the one, or of Creation to the Creator, saying: And as all things have been and have come from One, so all things are born from this one thing by adaptation. 1. See the end of chapter ii. 2. Id. positive above analogous to below What is below is like what is above — 661 — Here, in a few words, is the whole teaching of the sanctuary on the creation of the World. Creation by adaptation, or by the quaternary, developed within the Sepher Jesirah 1 and within the first ten chapters of the Béreschit of Moses 2. This one thing from which everything derives is the universal Force, whose generation Hermès describes:
3This thing which he calls Thélème (Volonté) is of such importance that, at the risk of unduly lengthening this explanation, I shall show the opinion of several authors on the subject: "There exists a mixed agent, a natural and divine agent, corporeal and spiritual, a universal plastic mediator, a common receptacle for the vibrations of movement and the images of form, a fluid and a force that might in some manner be called the imagination of nature. "Through this force all the nervous apparatuses secretly communicate with one another; from it are born sympathy and antipathy; from it come dreams; through it occur the phenomena of second sight and supernatural vision. This universal agent of the works of nature is the od of the Hebrews and of the Chevalier de Reichenbach, it is the astral light of the Martinists. "The existence and possible use of this force are the great arcanum of practical magic. "The astral light magnetizes, warms, illumines, magnetizes; attracts, repels; vivifies, destroys; coagulates, separates; breaks, gathers together all things under the impulse of powerful wills." (E. Levi, H. de la M., 19.) "The four imponderable fluids are but the diverse manifestations of one and the same universal agent, which is light." (E. Levi, C. des G. M., 207.) 1.
