1° La dépêche à transmettre;

Le Magnétiseur agit en remplaçant, par son idée, l’idée du sujet lui-même. Le corps astral du sujet obéit passivement à l’incitation venue de l’idée du magnétiseur, comme il obéirait à l’incitation venue de l’idée du sujet lui-même;

A muscle will always contract, whether the incitement comes from an order of the brain or from an external electric current.

Likewise organic matter can obey all incitements, whether they come from the life of the person acting or from the life of another person.

Three orders of phenomena are connected with this theory:

The phenomena of Magnetism.

The phenomena of Spiritism.

The phenomena of Magic.

Magnetism and the Astral Body.

In the phenomena of Magnetism, a person is plunged into a special sleep, characterized by the fact that the relations between the idea and the rest of the organism are cut.

The magnetic subject is like a telegraphic apparatus that would be composed only of the conducting wire (the nerves ready to act) and of the receiving apparatus (the body). What is missing?

1° The dispatch to be transmitted;

2° The starting apparatus, the transmitting apparatus (the

— 844 —

brain), whose relations with the receiver (the body) are cut.

The Magnetizer acts by replacing, with his idea, the idea of the subject himself. The astral body of the subject passively obeys the incitement coming from the idea of the magnetizer, just as it would obey the incitement coming from the idea of the subject himself; such is the theory of suggestion, that is to say of the order given to the astral body by a brain other than that of the subject to whom this astral body properly belongs.

What is more, certain so-called psychic faculties, which be-

— 845 long as much to the astral body as to the soul itself, such as memory, can preserve the incitement coming from a foreign brain just as well as they would have preserved the incitement coming from the person himself; hence suggestion with a more or less long delay.

Esoteric theory teaching that ideas are active powers, real beings, one sees how a suggestion with a delay consists in placing in a subject's brain a germ in potentiality, a germ which will become an active being, which will be born to life on the day fixed by the operator (three days, a month, a year after the suggestion) and which will send its impulse to the astral body.

But, in certain cases, the facts of Magnetism touch very closely upon the Magic of the ancient temples. This is when the will of the Magnetizer, acting upon the astral body of the subject, sends this astral body to a distance, which allows one to see far off independently of time and space.

But, for this action to take place, it is necessary that the subject's life, that his astral body, have a point of reference, a sure guide that puts it in relation with the person or the place one wishes to describe.

Without this fluidic thread, invisible to material eyes and visible to all seeing subjects, one can no more send the subject's astral body than the telegraphist can send dispatches without a conducting wire.

That is why the scholars who lock a letter in a safe and who challenge the magnetizers to have this letter read will never obtain a response.

The subject, not being guided, will go into the brain of his magnetizer and no further.

The following schematic figures indicate these cases.

The difference between Magnetism and Magic is that in the latter, the Mage voluntarily sends his

own astral body to the desired point, without losing consciousness and without needing an intermediary.

In spiritist phenomena, the relation between the soul and the astral body is likewise broken. But this time, no magnetizer comes to put his will in the place of the subject's.

In the subject producing important spiritist phenomena, a subject called a medium, that is to say an intermediary, the astral body likewise goes out; but it is directed by actions most often invisible.

Sometimes it is from a sitter or a group of these sitters,

that the impulse departs, the idea that will direct this astral body; sometimes it is a spirit, as the spiritists say, that comes to take possession of the medium's astral body in order to manifest itself.
