1La première phase du développement de l’être humain allant depuis la fécondation de l’œuf jusqu’à la naissance peut se résumer à ceci : Fabrication du corps matériel. dont le centre d’action est dans le ventre et qui correspond à la matière dans la nature. Ce corps matériel est composé de trois principes : matière, vie, âme, comme tous les êtres vivants; il suffit de se reporter à l'analyse du corps chez l’homme1 pour savoir que ces trois principes sont : 1° Le corps matériel lui-même (Rupa), la matière du corps physique ; 2° La vie de ce corps physique (Jiva), la vitalité ; 3° L’âme de ce corps physique (Linga sharira), le corps astral. Voilà pourquoi tous les principes dont nous venons de parler se réduisent en somme au développement du seul corps matériel. La preuve de tout cela c’est qu’avant la naissance l’embryon est relié à la source de ses réserves vitales par un cordon matériel qui vient plonger dans le ventre : le cordon ombilical. 1. Si le ventre est le centre d’action de ce corps physique, la poitrine est le centre d’action du second des .principes : la vie ou le corps astral, — On sait que la partie inférieure de ce second principe est commune au précédent. ★ * *
2Au moment de la naissance le cœur seul fonctionne, le poumon ne fonctionne pas, c’est-à-dire que l'être humain n'est pas encore en rapport avec la vie planétaire directement. 1 Le cordon ombilical matériel. — Lien du Ventre à la source de vitalisation et de nutrition. Lorsque le moment de naître à la vie planétaire est arrivé pour cet être humain, un phénomène sur lequel on n’a pas assez insisté se produit. L’œuf qui contenait l’homme futur se brise. L’enfant naît à la vie terrestre, c’est-à-dire qu’au même moment ses poumons fonctionnent . Une relation étroite vient de 19 s’établir entre le nouvel être et la Terre grâce à l’atmosphère . Le cordon ombilical matériel, inutile maintenant, est définitivement coupé. La bouche entre en action ainsi que les organes digestifs et le remplacent en partie. L’enfant qui vient de naître n’est plus lié visiblement au monde matériel; mais un lien, invisible pour le profane, vient de naître. Ce lien est plus nécessaire encore que le cordon ombilical à la vie de l’homme ; c’est la respiration qui constitue un cordon ombilical astral dont le centre est dans la poitrine. Le second cordon ombilical. — Lien de l’homme à la terre par l’atmosphère. — La respiration. — Naissance à la vie planétaire. Un axiome médical courant c’est qu’on ne meurt jamais que d'asphyxie, quelle que soit la cause apparente de la mort. L’arrêt des fonctions pulmonaires est en effet la . seule caractéristique inévitable de cette mort.
3Qu’est-ce que cet arrêt sinon la rupture du cordon ombilical astral qui détermine une nouvelle naissance appelée - - 291 — mort, naissance dont nous allons avoir à nous occuper bientôt? L’histoire de la Vague de Vie dans les planètes, puis dans les continents, puis dans les races et enfin dans l’hommè vivant, nous a montré un fait constant : que le terme supérieur d’une série ne paraît qu'au moment où le terme immédiatement inférieur a terminé son action. Nous trouvons ici une preuve éclatante de celte donnée. C’est quand la construction du corps est achevée que la vie fait son entrée. Nous venons de le voir. Mais de là découle une considération de la plus haute importance. C’est au moment où cette vie, déjà en germe, prend son développement que l’àme s’incarne en germe dans le corps humain. Nous allons voir ce qu’on peut entendre par cette incarnation « en germe » de l’âme. Le fait capital à retenir de suite, c’est que c’est au moment de la naissance et après la première aspiration seulement que le germe du principe supérieur de l'homme s’incarne en lui. 1The first phase of the development of the human being, running from the fertilization of the egg to birth, may be summed up in this: the Manufacture of the material body, whose center of action is in the belly, and which corresponds to matter in nature. This material body is composed of three principles: matter, life, soul, like all living beings; one need only refer back to the analysis of the body in man1 to know that these three principles are: 1° The material body itself (Rupa), the matter of the physical body; 2° The life of this physical body (Jiva), the vitality; 3° The soul of this physical body (Linga sharira), the astral body. This is why all the principles we have just spoken of come down, in sum, to the development of the single material body. The proof of all this is that, before birth, the embryo is linked to the source of its vital reserves by a material cord that plunges into the belly: the umbilical cord. 1. 2At the moment of birth, the heart alone functions, the lung does not function — that is, the human being is not yet in direct relation with planetary life. 1 The material umbilical cord. — Link from the Belly to the source of vitalization and nutrition. When the moment has arrived for this human being to be born to planetary life, a phenomenon occurs on which too little emphasis has been placed. The egg that contained the future man breaks open. The child is born to earthly life — that is, at that same moment its lungs begin to function. A close relation has just been established between the new being and the Earth, by means of the atmosphere. 19 The material umbilical cord, now useless, is definitively cut. The mouth comes into action, together with the digestive organs, and replaces it in part. The child that has just been born is no longer visibly bound to the material world; but a bond, invisible to the uninitiated, has just been born. This bond is even more necessary than the umbilical cord to the life of man; it is the respiration that constitutes an astral umbilical cord, whose center is in the chest. The second umbilical cord. — Link from man to the earth by the atmosphere. — Respiration. — Birth to planetary life. A common medical axiom is that one never dies except of asphyxia, whatever the apparent cause of death. The cessation of the pulmonary functions is, indeed, the sole inevitable characteristic of this death.
3What, then, is this cessation, if not the rupture of the astral umbilical cord, which determines a new birth called - - 291 — death — a birth we shall soon have to concern ourselves with? The history of the Wave of Life within the planets, then within the continents, then within the races, and finally within living man, has shown us one constant fact: that the higher term of a series appears only at the moment when the immediately lower term has finished its action. We find here a striking proof of this fact. It is when the building of the body is complete that life makes its entry. We have just seen this. But from this follows a consideration of the highest importance. It is at the moment when this life, already in germ, undergoes its development, that the soul incarnates itself, in germ, within the human body. We shall now see what may be meant by this 'incarnation in germ' of the soul. The capital fact to be remembered at once is that it is at the moment of birth, and only after the first breath, that the germ of the higher principle of man becomes incarnate within him.
