1'The process that is accomplished, as we have just described, with respect to the passage of the wave of life from globe A to globe B, repeats itself all along the chain. When the wave passes to C, B falls into obscuration just as A did. Then D receives the flood of life, and A, B, C are in obscuration. When the wave reaches G, the six preceding worlds are in obscuration. Meanwhile the wave of life passes on according to a certain regular progression, whose symmetrical character is most satisfying to scientific instincts. Keeping in mind the explanation just given, the reader will be prepared to grasp at once the idea of the manner in which humanity evolves through seven great races during each period of Rounds upon a planet — that is, while the wave of life occupies that planet. The fourth race is evidently the middle race of the series. As soon as the point is turned and the evolution of the fifth race on a given planet begins, the preparation for humanity begins on the next. For example, the evolution of the fifth race on E is proportioned to the evolution, or rather to the renewal, of the mineral kingdom on D, and so on. Consequently, the evolution of the sixth race on D coincides with the renewal of the vegetable kingdom on E; the seventh race on D with the renewal of the animal kingdom on E; and then, when the last monads of the seventh race on D have passed into the subjective state, or world of
2effects, the human period begins on E, and the first race begins to develop there. Meanwhile, the twilight period of the world preceding D has deepened in the same progressive manner until night falls, and the obscuration became final when the human period on D had passed the midpoint of its evolution. The Awakening of the Planet is a vaster process than its descent into rest, for, before the return of the human wave, it must attain a degree of perfection higher than that which it had reached when, for the last time, the wave left its shore. But at each new beginning, nature is imbued with a vigor peculiarly its own. It is the freshness of morning. Just as, if one regards the chain of worlds as a Unity, it has its North and South poles, or spiritual and material — that is, evolving from spirituality to descend through materiality and to rise again to spirituality — so likewise the rounds of humanity constitute a similar series, of which the chain of Globes may be taken as the symbol. In the evolution of man on one plane, as on all the others, there is in fact a descending Arc and an ascending Arc; spirit enveloping itself, so to speak, in matter, and matter developing up to spirit. The lowest and most material point of the cycle thus becomes the inverted summit of physical intelligence, which is the veiled manifestation of spiritual intelligence. Each Round of humanity evolved on the descending Arc (as each race of each Round, if we go down to the smallest plane of the Cosmos), must, consequently, be physically more intelligent than the one that preceded it, while each Round of the ascending Arc must possess more refined mental conditions, joined to a greater spiritual intuition.
3'Consequently, in the first Round, we find — 257 — that man is a relatively etherealized being; even compared, on earth, to the state he has reached here, he is not intellectual, but supra-spiritual. 'Like the animal and vegetable forms that surround him at that time, he inhabits an immense body, but one whose organization is loosely condensed. In the second round, he is still gigantic and etherealized, but his body draws in and becomes firmer — in a word, he becomes more physical, but still less intelligent than spiritual. In the third round, he has developed a body that is altogether concrete and compact, resembling a giant ape rather more than a true man, but whose intelligence progresses more and more. In the second half of the third round, his immense stature decreases, the texture of his body improves, and he begins to be a rational man.
