Before going further, let us sum up the state of the three esoteric principles we know of, at the moment when the three layers have just appeared. The body, the vitality, the astral body existed within the fertilized egg. But these principles had, as yet, nothing personal, being alone at work within a mass not yet evolved. The astral body, at first condensed at the center of the egg, is not slow to spread throughout the mass of this egg; hence the segmentation. — 284 — Each of the globules thus formed is constituted of the three principles: body, vitality, and astral body; it is a true being, though of an inferior nature. When the enveloping membrane is formed by the union of all the globules at the periphery of the egg, the vitality concentrates at one particular point of this membrane, and the first divisions come into being (layers). 2nd Phase. — Birth of the layers.
3The astral body soon in turn concentrates itself within one of these layers, which will become the general center of direction for the building of the organism. This phase is marked by the birth of a thin nervous line within the outer layer; this is the primitive streak, the true starting point of the individual being. 3rd Phase. — Formation of the new center. Individualization of the being. At this moment the embryo is already more than a plant; the — 285 — nervous system has just been born, the astral body is complete, the embryo enters the animal series it is about to traverse. § 4. INCARNATION OF THE SOUL INTO THE BODY — DETERMINATION OF THE TIMING OF THE PHENOMENON 'Man traverses, in his embryonic development, an astonishing morphological ladder, by turns furnished with a tail and gills, at one period without skull or brain, at another with the heart of an ascidian or the cloaca of a monotreme or of a bird.1' Our intention, it will easily be understood, is not to give a course in embryology. We are inquiring in what order the principles of man become incarnate. And so we shall concern ourselves only with the evolution of a single system: the nervous system. In pursuing the evolution of the nervous system across the animal series (see p. 214), we have been able to trace the progressive birth of the principles of esotericism.
