1The fourth circle again has twenty-four compartments, with the twenty-four Tcheou, or rhumbs, of the ordinary compass. The fifth circle contains seventy-two compartments, of which twelve remain blank, while the other sixty are filled with combinations of the characters of the two cycles of twelve and of ten, in such a way that all six Tsu, all six Tcheou, all six In, etc., stay together and are placed beneath the same characters found in the preceding circle. — 36 — The sixth circle contains a hundred and twenty compartments, of which seventy-two are empty; in the others one sees forty-eight combinations of the characters of the two cycles of twelve and of ten. The seventh circle is made up of twenty-four compartments, containing the twenty-four Tcheou, but which do not quite correspond in a straight line to those of the fourth circle; they are shifted half a compartment further to the left, when one faces south. The eighth circle contains the same sixty cyclical combinations, without blank compartments, but placed a little further to the left. The ninth circle shows, in twenty-four compartments, the twenty-four Tcheou placed half a compartment further to the right than those of the fourth circle.
2The tenth circle is divided into a hundred and twenty compartments, of which seventy-two remain blank; the other forty-four contain the same forty-four cyclical combinations as the sixth circle, but placed a little further to the right. The eleventh circle has, in sixty compartments, the combinations of the cycle of sixty, placed a little further to the left than those of the eighth circle, and further still than those of the fifth. The twelfth circle contains, in sixty combinations, the names, twelve times repeated, of the five Chinese elements, namely: Mou, wood; Ho, fire; Thou, earth; Kin, metal; Choui, water. These five elements correspond, in the following manner, to the five seasons of the year, the five regions of the world, and the five principal colors: Wood. Spring. The East. Green. Fire. Summer. The South. Red. — 37 Earth. The middle of the year. The center. Yellow. Metal. Autumn. The West. White. Water. Winter. The North. Black. The thirteenth circle contains, in three hundred and sixty compartments, the number of degrees occupied by each of the twenty-eight celestial Palaces indicated in the fifteenth circle. The fourteenth has just as many compartments, and contains signs relating to these degrees, but which I do not know how to explain. The fifteenth circle, finally, contains the twenty-eight Sou, or Palaces, of the Chinese ecliptic, which are: To the east. 1. Kio, the horn, having more than 12 degrees.1
