On trouvera

1. Fabre d’Olivet, Vers dorés de Pythagore, p. 270. Astrologie.

2. Clef des choses cachées, Amsterdam, 1646.

When, as a result of the persecutions of arbitrary power, the initiates were obliged to save the principles of their science, they composed, according to the stars, a mysterious book, summary and key to all ancient science, and delivered this book to the profane without giving them its key 1. The alchemists understood the mysterious meaning of this book, and several of their treatises, among others the twelve keys of Basil Valentine, are based on its interpretation. Guillaume Postel rediscovered its meaning and called it the Genesis of Enoch 2; the Rose-Croix likewise possessed it 3, and the higher initiations have not lost the secret of it, as the works of the theosophist de Saint-Martin 4, established according to this data, prove. One will find

1. Fabre d'Olivet, Vers dorés de Pythagore, p. 270. Astrologie.

2. Clef des choses cachées, Amsterdam, 1646.

3. The Rose-Croix affirm, for example, that they have a book in which they can learn everything that is in every other book, made or yet to be made (Naudé, cited by Figuier, p. 299).

These Rose-Croix must not be confused with the holders of the 18° Masonic degree, who bear the same title and know nothing. (See Francs-Maçons et Théosophes, n° 5 du Lotus.)

developments on this subject in the last chapters of the Rituel de Haute Magie, by Eliphas Levi, and in my volume on the Tarot des Bohémiens.

Symbolic histories represent the positive meaning of the truths enunciated; the tables correspond to the comparative meaning and to the analysis of these truths; we shall presently study the "ignés" (a scanning garble, likely for "signes," i.e. "signs") that correspond to the synthesis.

Before that, two questions remain to be elucidated: the construction and the reading of these tables.

To construct an analogical table, one first determines the number (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) of which the table is the development. Thus the magical table below is constructed according to the number 4. It will thus first be necessary to have as many columns as there are principles studied, that is to say as many columns as the number represents units. Let us take, as an example, four arbitrary facts and determine their position according to the number Three.

Osiris

Isis -

Horus

Father

Mother

Child

Sun

Moon

Mercury

Penumbra

Fire

We do indeed see an exposition in this table, but we do not know of what the facts are the development. So it is necessary to add a supplementary column to the preceding columns, in which we shall write what is here lacking to us.

But all these facts, however numerous they may be, are arranged according to the hierarchy of the Three Worlds; so a further column must still be added, which brings to two the number of supplementary columns

It suffices to refer to Agrippa's table to see the use of this column of the Three Worlds.

The reading and practice of the analogical tables are largely based upon the reading of ancient numerical tables, among others the table of Pythagoras. This reading is done according to the right triangle, as follows:

12 3 4

2 4 6 8

3 6 9 12

4 8 12 16

Suppose we wish to find what number the multiplication of 3 by 4 gives. The result sought will be at the right angle of a right triangle whose two other angles will be formed by the elements of the multiplication, as follows:

4. 8 12 IC

It can be seen that the result 12 is found at the right angle of the right triangle.

— 958

11 (a scanning garble for "Il," i.e. "It") suffices to apply this data to an analogical table to form phrases strange to whoever does not have the key to them, thus:
