Le domaine des Yeux;
Le domaine du Nez;
Le domaine de la Bouche.
Le corps plié.
Le liras plié.
La main pliée.
Un doigt plié.

Facts of great importance from the magical point of view are furnished to us by the relations we now have to consider:

RELATION OF THE TRUNK WITH THE LIMBS
The particular segment of the trunk on which the limbs depend imprints upon them a special character which furnishes very profound teachings to the Magus, while entirely escaping the investigations of the ordinary physician.
All the sciences of divination by the inspection of features and lines are based on the relations that link all the segments to one another. It would be hazardous for me at this moment to undertake the scientific defense of Metoposcopy (divination by the lines of the forehead) or of Chiromancy (divination by the lines of the hand); so I shall put off this discussion for now, while noting that those who dismiss all this as ridiculous superstition are wholly ignorant of the reasons for which they make this assertion. However, I must show the possible relations that link all these segments to one another, and I shall, in this connection, give some details concerning the face and the relations of the organs found there with the rest of the organism; but, first, we shall finish what pertains to our present study.
Each of the principal divisions of the limbs corresponds to a segment of the trunk; more than that, within each limb, the divisions of one part correspond to the analogous division of the whole limb.
Thus the divisions of the finger:
Phalanx, Middle Phalanx, Terminal Phalanx,
correspond exactly to the divisions of the hand:
Wrist, Palm, Finger,
to such a point that the anatomical constitution of a phalan-
— 800
gette will analogically reproduce that of the whole finger. This is a point of philosophical anatomy which has not, to my knowledge, been gone into deeply. Likewise the divisions of the hand correspond in every point to those of the arm:
Arm, Forearm, Hand,
and these correspond in turn to the divisions of the trunk:
Belly, Chest, Head.
If we draw up, from these very elementary data, a table of correspondence, we shall obtain the following:
Trunk
Belly
Chest
Head
—
—
—
—
Arm
Arm
Forearm
Hand
(Limb)
Hand
Wrist
Palm
Finger
Finger
Phalanx
Middle Phalanx
Terminal Phalanx
Thus the Arm, the Wrist, or the Phalanx will indicate to us the visible or occult relations to be established with the belly; just as if we wish to know what is happening in the head, we shall have recourse to the examination of the whole hand, or only of a finger, or even of the terminal phalanx, which represents this head in particular.

Hence all the indications of the chiromancers. The following figure makes these relations still better understood:
Just as the trunk is divided into three segments, just as each of the limbs is divided into three parts, so too the human face presents three great domains, as Lavater determined:
The domain of the Eyes;
The domain of the Nose;
The domain of the Mouth.
The body bent.
The arm bent.
The hand bent.
A finger bent.

1. The Eyes. — Anatomically, the eyes are in direct relation with the brain. They are, properly speaking, the windows of the brain, and it is in them that we see painted those emotions which stir the whole being.
Mental illnesses almost always exert a very characteristic action upon the eyes, and especially upon the pupil. The eyes therefore correspond in every point to the head.
II. The Nose. — The nose is in direct relation with the channel that leads the air into the lungs: the trachea. It is the essential organ of Respiration. Man can also breathe through the mouth; but mammals, and especially the horse, are incapable of it, which indeed indicates that the nose is the window of the chest, just as the eyes are those of the head.
Window of the Head.
Window of the Chest.
Window of the Belly.
