1studies, two more: A Brûler and L'Élixir de vie, the clearest summary that has been made of Occult Science: La Magie pratique [Practical Magic]. M. Lermina is an example of what can be done when one wishes to join assiduous labor to a man of letters' gifts. Wishing to understand these questions thoroughly, this author does not hesitate to work at Hebrew and Sanskrit at the same XXIII time as the most arduous books of the masters of occultism. And so he is today one of its most learned representatives. In short, our list would be very long indeed if we had to mention all the contemporary men of letters attached to these ideas, such as Guy de Maupassant (le Horla), Anatole France (Thaïs), Gilbert-Augustin Thierry (la Tresse blonde), 1L de Maricourt (l'Œil du dragon, Batracien mélomane), or Huysmans (Là-bas), etc., etc. Aesthetics, in all its branches, counts representatives among the students of Occult Science. Let us note, for the record, the works of Augusta Holmès, the pieces of Ch. de Sivry and of Henri Welch on music, and the studies of Joséphin Péladan and his disciple F. Yurgey on painting.
2And let no one come and tell me that the defenders of imagination alone occupy themselves with these questions. The movement, we have said, shows the traces of its action in every branch of intellectual activity, even the most rigorously technical. Thus Charles Henry, who has seriously studied Wronski, applies these data to his mathematical works; Gérard Encausse applies the analogical method in his Essai de physiologie synthétique [Essay on Synthetic Physiology]. Albert Faucheux obtains a prize from the Academy by applying this same method to pedagogy, while Horace Lefort claims, on the basis of the esoteric tradition, a return to the national genius in his Erreur latine [Latin Error]. Everywhere the movement grows more pronounced; in philosophy it is F. Ch. Barlet, the most learned and the most modest of all French occultists, who shows the depth of esotericism in his Essai sur l'évolution de l'idée [Essay on the Evolution of the Idea]; in sociology it is Julien Lejay who brings out his Essai de sociologie XXIV
3analogique [Essay on Analogical Sociology], a truly masterful work; in orientalism it is Augustin Chaboseau who writes the Essai sur la philosophie du bouddhisme [Essay on the Philosophy of Buddhism], showing the relations between the two traditions, Eastern and Western; in history, finally, it is Jules Doinel, the archivist of the Loiret, reviving the Gnosis; it is Marcus de Vèze studying Egyptology in its relations with esoteric science; it is Napoléon Ney unveiling occultism's hold upon the Muslim secret societies; it is Doctor Delézinier restoring the origins of chemistry through a thorough study of hermetic philosophy; it is Albert Poisson explaining, at last, the theories and symbols of the Alchemists. We have spoken only of those who study Occult Science from the point of view of its applications; let us now render justice to the militant occultists, the most authoritative representatives of the Western tradition. The Marquis de Saint-Yves d'Alveydre, disciple of Fabre d'Olivet, cannot be regarded as an unqualified partisan of the ideas defended by occultism. This eminent author occupies himself chiefly with esoteric science in its relations to the government of peoples.
