Let us cite in support of this fact those very particular colorings of the cheekbones in diseases of the lung; those characteristic depressions at the level of the wings of the nose (cardiac facies) in diseases of the heart, facts well established by our learned contemporary physicians, but absolutely inexplicable to them... and for good reason!
III. The Mouth. — The Mouth corresponds directly to the food canal, to the esophagus, and through it to the Belly; it is the window of the Belly.
If these ideas seemed absurd to some scholar, I would ask him to tell me why he has patients stick out their tongue in order to gauge the state of their stomach,
— 8i;j —
and why peritonitis exerts so particular an action upon the lips of people afflicted with this condition. Magic alone allows one to give a sufficient reason for all these facts.
In summary, the Head, the Chest and the Belly have their windows upon the face itself, in the Eyes, the Nose and the Mouth. That is why Paracelsus, the great initiate, made medical diagnoses from the mere inspection of the features.
However, these divisions are very general, and we can go further still if that interests you.
Thus the domain of the eyes comprises three parts: the forehead, which is truly the head of the head as correspondence; the eye, which is the head of the chest, that is to say the place where the loftiest affections of passionate origin will be painted (love — hatred — anger, etc., etc.); the lower eyelid, which is the head of the belly, the place where the traces of the pleasures or the pains originating in the belly will be painted (all venereal excesses are painted by a black circle beneath the eyes, as are many specific conditions, metritis, prostatitis, etc.).
The domain of the chest likewise comprises three parts: the root of the nose or chest of the head; the cheekbones or chest of the chest, and the wings of the nose with the two lines that start from them, or chest of the belly. These two lines are the reproduction, in this domain, of the lines that underline the eyes in the preceding domain.
Likewise, the domain of the mouth comprises the upper lip or belly of the head; the lower lip or belly of the chest, and the chin or belly of the belly. We give these divisions without explaining them further; they serve as the basis for a host of systems of divination and must be known to all who occupy themselves with Occult Science.
CHAPTER XIX
EXAMPLE OF A SCIENCE OF DIVINATION
CHIROMANCY
SYNTHETIC SUMMARY OF CHIROMANCY
Our study would be incomplete if we did not give the foundations of at least one of the sciences called: of divination.
I am well aware that those ignorant of Occult Science claim that these sciences of divination are entirely false and can give no serious result. Facts come, every day, to give the lie to these fine words.
A procedure dear to contemporary criticism consists in judging a work solely on the points touching on this kind of study. It is thus that, for the Larousse 1, my work on the Tarot is reduced solely to the chapter dedicated to the ladies and devoted to cartomancy.
Be that as it may, since my concern is, above all, to be complete, I shall develop the principal data of one of the oldest known sciences of divination: Chiromancy (the reading of the hand).
Applying Occult Science to the theory of chiromancy, I shall present this art in an entirely new light, giving teachings that one would seek in vain in the modern treatises on the subject. These treatises, especially that of Desbarolles, will be useful to consult for the detailed analyses; I shall content myself in this chapter with considering the question from a purely synthetic point of view.
