Privacy Policy
Who we are
The Collective Press, an imprint of Humilis Memoriam, publishes thecollectivepress.org. This policy says what we hold about you, why, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and how to have it given to you or erased. What we hold, and why
- Your account — email, a password stored only as a salted hash (or the Google or GitHub account you sign in with), and the name you give, if any.
- Your practice and reading — assessment answers and result, practice sessions, lesson and reading progress, your place in a text, your praxis schedule. So you can pick up where you left off.
- What you tell us — interests, goals, how you heard of us. Optional.
- Membership and purchases — your plan and its dates, orders, receipts, and the exact sentence you agreed to when you waived the 14-day withdrawal right. Card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
- Letters — your address and whether you confirmed it.
- A request for Scholar or a scholarship — what you wrote, and the decision.
- Mail we send you — the subject, kind and date of each message.
- How the site is used — pages visited, in our own database, against a random key kept in your browser, and the campaign or site that brought you. Linked to your account only while you are signed in.
- Questions put to Ask — kept without your name or account.
Who else handles it
We sell nothing, and share only with the services that run the site, each for its own part:
- Supabase — database, sign-in, files, background jobs (almost everything)
- Vercel — hosting; sees your IP address and request, as any host does
- Namecheap — domain and DNS; does not see your traffic
- Stripe — payments; receives card and billing details directly
- Proton — sends our email; holds the privacy@ mailbox
- Anthropic — composes Ask's answers (Scholars only)
- Sentry — error reports, which may include your IP address
- Google — only if you accept its cookies, or sign in with Google
- GitHub — only if you sign in with GitHub
We disclose information when the law requires it, and resist any request to unmask a pseudonymous member short of a court order.
How long we keep it
- Your account and all linked to it — until you close it.
- Sale records — kept after closure, unlinked from you, as tax law requires.
- Your checkout consent — six years after closure, unlinked; then deleted.
- Email we sent you — after closure, only that a message of that kind was sent on that date.
- Page views — deleted with your account.
- Our record that your account was closed — kept, as proof it was done.
Your rights
From your account page, at any time, without asking us:
- download everything linked to you, in one file;
- correct your details;
- leave the Letters list (every letter has a one-click way out too);
- end your membership, keeping access to the end of the paid period;
- close your account, which erases your data as described above.
For anything else — a question, a correction you cannot make, an objection — write to privacy@thecollectivepress.org; we answer within 30 days.
In the EU or UK you hold the rights the GDPR gives, including to complain to your data protection authority. In California you hold the rights the CCPA gives. We sell no personal information. Google's advertising cookies, if you accept them, may be used for remarketing, which California law may count as 'sharing'; declining them in the cookie bar opts you out.
Children
The site is not meant for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly hold their data. If you believe a child has an account, write to privacy@thecollectivepress.org and we will erase it.
Security
Data travels encrypted; passwords are stored as salted hashes; every table of member data is guarded by row-level security, so a member can read only their own rows; staff access is limited to what the work needs. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will tell you without undue delay.
Where it is held
Our services run from the United States, and your information is stored and processed there.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date at the top moves. If a change affects what we hold or who handles it, we email members before it takes effect.
