Cet objet sert de crochet, de point d’appui au sujet pour conduire ses recherches. Sans cet objet les rapports sont presque impossibles à établir. Voilà, en passant, la raison pour laquelle il est impossible presque généralement à un sujet « voyant » de dire les cours de la bourse du lendemain ou le nom du gagnant dans une course. Ces faits peuvent arriver, mais c’est alors une exception amenée par certains points de rapport généralement absents.
2Partant de cette donnée toute simple, on comprend pourquoi tous les occultistes sérieux admettent qu’on peut parfaitement communiquer avec l’âme d’un être qu’on a connu et surtout qu’on a aimé. Ainsi qu’on F a vu au début de ce chapitre, l’aine après la mort cherche un cœur aimant où se réfugier. Rien d’impossible par suite à la communication dans ce cas. Quand le sujet somnambulique n’a pas de point d’appui pour exercer son activité, il prend des points d’appui dans le cerveau du consultant et lui récite ses pensées. Le consultant se figure-t-il être appelé à un brillant avenir? Le sujet subit malgré lui sou influence et raconte au questionneur que telle ou telle magnifique affaire se réalisera et que la richesse lui viendra subitement de ce chef. Le consultant sort ravi en s’écriant : « Quelle merveille ! le sujet m’a dit des choses que moi seul savais ! ! » C’est justement là le danger à éviter. — 341 Aussi, quand vous pénétrez dans un milieu spirite et que vous assistez à une communication de saint Jean, Fauteur de l’apocalypse ou de la Vierge Marie, cherchez dans l’assistance non pas l’esprit invisible, mais bien le cerveau d’où vient cette communication. Cette enquête .facile à faire vous instruira sur une des causes les plus fréquentes du phénomène, et vous verrez pourquoi l’on a pu avoir dans certains milieux des communications de la mère d' Homère [\ ) ou de d' Artag nan (! !) , le héros d’un roman d’Alexandre Dumas.
3Si nous n’hésitons pas à dévoiler les erreurs commises par certains fanatiques dangereux, dans le genre de M. Henry Lacroix1, c’est que ces erreurs nuisent à une cause que nous croyons juste et bonne, et que nous sommes désolé de voir exploiter de cette façon. Il ne faut pas que les travailleurs consciencieux subissent les conséquences de certaines théories outrées qui inspirent de suite une juste méfiance à tous les gens raisonnables. Un autre point qui montre cette exagération, c’est celui de la réincarnation. D’après la Science occulte, l’âme ne peut se réincarner que très longtemps après la vie précédente. Les chiffres donnés ordinairement, 1500 ans, sont tirés de calculs astronomiques par l’ésotérisme indou. Certaines exceptions très limitées existent à cette règle, parmi lesquelles nous citerons : La mort avant la jeunesse ; Lê suicide ou la mort violente ; La réincarnation consciente d’un adepte, etc. Toutefois on peut discuter le nombre exact d'années 1. This object serves the subject as a hook, a point of purchase, to guide his researches. Without this object, the connection is almost impossible to establish. Here, in passing, is the reason why it is almost always impossible for a "seeing" subject to name tomorrow's stock-exchange prices or the name of the winner in a race. Such things can happen, but they are then an exception brought about by certain points of connection generally absent.
2Starting from this quite simple fact, one understands why every serious occultist admits that one can perfectly well communicate with the soul of a being one has known, and above all loved. As was seen at the start of this chapter, the soul after death seeks a loving heart in which to take refuge. Nothing, then, prevents communication in such a case. When the somnambulistic subject has no point of purchase for exercising his activity, he takes points of purchase within the questioner's own brain and recites the questioner's thoughts back to him. Does the questioner imagine himself called to a brilliant future? The subject, despite himself, falls under this influence and tells the questioner that such-and-such a magnificent venture will come to pass and that wealth will suddenly come to him on that account. The questioner leaves delighted, exclaiming: "What a marvel! The subject told me things that I alone knew!!" That is exactly the danger to be avoided. — 341 So too, when you enter a spiritist circle and witness a communication from Saint John, the author of the Apocalypse, or from the Virgin Mary, look in the audience not for the invisible spirit, but rather for the brain from which this communication comes. This inquiry, easy enough to make, will instruct you in one of the most frequent causes of the phenomenon, and you will see why, in certain circles, communications have been had from the mother of Homer (!) or from d'Artagnan (!!), the hero of a novel by Alexandre Dumas.
3If we do not hesitate to expose the errors committed by certain dangerous fanatics, of the sort of M. Henry Lacroix1, it is because these errors harm a cause we believe to be just and good, and which we are sorry to see exploited in this way. Conscientious workers ought not to suffer the consequences of certain overblown theories that immediately inspire a rightful mistrust in all reasonable people. Another point that shows this exaggeration is that of reincarnation. According to Occult Science, the soul cannot reincarnate until a very long time after the previous life. The figures ordinarily given, 1500 years, are drawn from astronomical calculations by Hindu esotericism. Certain very limited exceptions exist to this rule, among which we shall cite: Death before youth; Suicide or violent death; The conscious reincarnation of an adept, etc. One may, however, dispute the exact number of years 1.
