1Germ or Beginning Development Complete constitution Man some time after birth. (State of the seven principles.) Holiness 7 Spirituality.. 6 Intellectuality S Passion Instinct 4 Astral body. 3 Need Vitality 2 Physical body 1 Principiation or Power to be Germ or Beginning Development Complete constitution The preceding tables show us all these phases well. The first represents the human being a little before birth. Life is in germ; but the soul is not yet incarnated. It is within the world of principiation; it is in potency of being — this is the state in which beings find themselves before being manifested. Fabre d'Olivet drew on his immense erudition to demonstrate that the first word of Genesis did not mean in the beginning, which would indicate that the world is already manifested, but rather in principle, which indicates the prior state. God creates in principle what afterward begins in due time. Saint John followed the common rule of all the great initiates by opening the book of Christian esotericism with these words: in principio erat verbum. The Word was in principle, IN POTENCY OF BEING. The column of principiation is left empty in the preceding tables precisely to indicate this special state.
2A little before birth, the soul is thus in principiation. At this moment, the life (the complete astral body) is in beginning, or in germ. As for the body, it is in full development. This is what the first table shows. The second table presents to us the state of the human being when the material umbilical cord is cut, and the first breath of air has just bound the child to the Earth, which it will not leave until the rupture of this new bond. At this moment the body has acquired its complete constitution,1 the life is in full development, and the soul has just incarnated itself, attaching itself to the developed life and, through it, to the organs. The soul is in germ. i. Insofar as this constitution is compatible with the age of the child. Thus certain organs, constituted at this moment, will not complete their full development until much later. — 294 — ¥ ¥ Do you wish for a phenomenon that indicates the precise moment when the soul is definitively bound to the body? It is the opening of the child's eyes to the light — that is, the opening of the windows of the soul. The third table indicates that this word soul designates only one of the lower principles of the soul properly speaking; the incarnation, even partial, of the soul in an active manner taking place only at the age of maturity, as the tables that close the study on 'the Wave of Life in man' indicate — a study of which this chapter is a complement.
3The soul, whose essential quality is a horror of matter, incarnates itself only progressively; certain men may even live through several existences without incarnating within themselves any of the higher principles. These higher principles, external to the individual, constitute his ideal, his personal god. The total immortality of the individual is attained only insofar as these higher principles incarnate themselves completely, which constitutes the state of Nirvana, the state of divinity for the cell of humanity. This explains why Louis Lucas and Hoëné Wronski maintain that the soul is a creation proper to the individual, presenting to eternity the flank of its responsibility.1 One sees from what precedes that the human being presents three stages of development: 1° Creation of the body (embryonic period). 1. Louis Lucas. — 295 12° Creation of the life (period of evolution on Earth) (many men go no further than this). 3° Creation of the soul, beginning on earth to develop after death. We now know enough of birth; on the other hand we have already set forth the evolution during life, so let us occupy ourselves a little with Death. But first I wish to cite a very fine passage from Eliphas Levi, in which the analogy between birth and death is established in a most suggestive manner.
