1The Kabbalah is so marvelously constructed that all the terms that make it up are but various faces of one another. Thus we are obliged, given the poverty of abstraction of our European languages, to study separately the meaning and the relations of the ten divine names, then the meaning and the relations of the ten numbers, all this in their various senses. Now, all of this, name, idea, and number, is found synthesized in each of the hieroglyphs, whether one speaks of the divine name or states the Sephirah. The analogical tables placed at the end of our study will scarcely suffice to give an idea of this synthetic spirit of antiquity. These names (all of which have a secret meaning developed in detail in the writings of the kabbalists) deserve to draw our particular attention. + * The first among them, Ehieh, is often written by the simple letter iod. In this case it signifies simply MOI (I, the Self). Lacour, in his book Les Æloïm ou Dieux de Moïse, shows that this word gave rise to the Greek aeï, always. Ehieh thus signifies exactly the Always, and one understands how the letter iod, which expresses the beginning and the end of all things, may represent it. I. The name IEVE or 10HA, never to be pronounced by the profane, is replaced by the word tetragrammaton or the word Adonaï (Lord). — 497 — This name, written mystically in a triangle by three iods, thus: ) ) 1
2represents the three principal attributes of the divinity from which creation emanates, the Always giving birth to temporal measures. The first iod indeed shows Eternity giving birth to Time in its threefold division: Past, Present, and Future. This is Number. This is the Father. ★ * + The second iod shows the Infinite giving birth to Space in its threefold division of length, breadth, and depth. This is Measure. This is the Son. The third iod represents the eternal Substance giving birth to Matter in its threefold specification of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous. This is Weight. This is the Holy Spirit. Gather into a whole Time, Space, and Matter, and the eternal and infinite Substance, and the Always will manifest itself. Hence the following representation of this divine name by the kabbalists: 32 — 498 — The correspondences of this name are thus given by Agrippa, one of the strongest kabbalists known1. 1° Eheie, the name of divine essence:
3Numeration: Kether (crown, diadem), signifies the very simple being of the divinity; it is called that which the eye has never seen. It is attributed to God the Father and it influences the order of the Seraphim, or, as the Hebrews say, Haioth Hakadosh, that is, in Latin animalia sanctitatis, the famous animals of holiness, and from there, through the first mobile, liberally gives the name of being to everything filling the Universe throughout its whole circumference down to the center. Its particular intelligence is called Metatron (Prince of Faces), whose office is to introduce the others before the face of the Prince, and it is by the ministry of this one that the Lord spoke to Moses. 2° Name Iah: Iod or Tetragrammaton joined with Iod; numeration Hochmah (, sapientia). Signifies divinity full of ideas and first-begotten, and is attributed to the Son. It influences the order of the cherubim (whom the Hebrews call Ophanim) upon the forms or wheels, and from there upon the heaven of the stars, fashioning there as many figures as it contains ideas within itself, unraveling the chaos or confusion of matter through the ministry of its particular intelligence named Raziel, who was the governor of Adam. 3° Name: IEYE — [Hebrew, OCR-garbled: niH*]. This name, one of the most mysterious of Hebrew theology, expresses one of the most astonishing natural laws we know of.
