1Against these critics, the theologians, deprived of their best means of persuasion, the stake, wish to quibble over the authenticity of the texts and end up denying all mythology, in order to establish, as historical fact, the legend of the infant who speaks philosophy and of the star that descends to earth expressly to guide magi to the bed of a virgin. The astronomer then protests, together with the physiologist, and the theologian ends up resembling a young child who stubbornly insists to his parents that he was born in a cabbage, to their great amusement. This obstinacy of the Church in maintaining scientific impossibilities leads Science to deny all value to religions and to regard them as created by a few tricksters, to exploit human stupidity. All the sacred books are regarded as apocryphal, and the independent man, mocking both the ignorance of the theologian and the denial of the scholar, blows out his brains as soon as he feels ill at ease on earth, in order, no doubt, to go draw his information from better sources. A little experience suffices, however, to make one understand that trickery rarely builds lasting works endowed with a resistance as powerful as that of a religion. — G20 -
2If one has understood what precedes, one will see that behind the mythic legend there is an individual who manifested the principle whose evolution is being recounted, and that, for lack of distinguishing exoterism from esoterism, one risks understanding nothing more of all these origins. It is easy to deny Moses, to say that Pythagoras never existed, and that Jesus is a myth. A few idle rabbis composed the Sepher; two or three unemployed professors, at the time, pooled their efforts to invent Greek philosophy; a few initiates created the Christ between two Bacchic dances — I am quite willing to grant it; but Israel is still standing, Greece illuminates Western intellectual life with its teachings, and Christianity has taken flight splendidly, for a trickery of its time1. Let us reflect a little, and we shall feel that there is a single head dominating each of these movements, just as there is only one for all the members of the body. On the day there are headless men, I shall admit that a collectivity wrote the Odyssey or the Sepher, but until then, no. Study seriously the Life of the initiate who came to manifest in the Occident the Principle of Christos — what will you find there? 1° A mythic framework, setting forth a series of esoteric laws, corresponding to the course of the Sun if you like; 1. The artistic studies of the celebrated painter James Tissot are more convincing in favor of the existence of Christ than all the combined works of contemporary critics.
3— 621 — 2° A series of precise facts, occurring in places determined geographically and easy to verify; 3° The existence of a personage, sometimes wholly divine, sometimes purely human, evolving between this mythology and these facts. The divine appears with the mythology, the human with the facts. Set aside the birth and resurrection, wholly symbolic, of this Jesus, and you will find a messenger of those Essenes, depositaries of the kabbalistic tradition, in this revealer who speaks to the people in parables (1 " sens exotérique — the exoteric sense), who initiates his future apostles into the true meaning of these parables (2° the intelligible sense. — Laws) and who reveals the totality of his doctrine to his favorite disciple, Saint John (3e sense). M. Édouard Schuré has written, masterfully, an admirable Life of Jesus 1, attempting to reconcile the mythology and the facts, without always succeeding. The Apocalypse and the opening of the Gospel of Saint John are there to prove the wholly kabbalistic origin of this initiate, who attained the power of manifestation of the Eternal Christos2. The evangelists write the Life of the Master, composing it according to the laws, always followed in that period, of esoterism. Saint John alone writes the history of the manifested Principle from its origin to its mystical ends. The 24 elders, the angels and their functions, the number of the beast — this is applied kabbalah, this is the proof of the complete possession of the Mosaic esoterism.
