La plupart de ceux qui se sont occupés de cette question n’ont abordé cette étude qu’avec une idée préconçue. Les auteurs chrétiens ne voient partout qu’influence divine ou révolte de Satan vaincu, ce qui ne peut nous satisfaire. — 61 o — Les philosophes indépendants (pii ont étudié le Gnosticisme ou l’Ecole d’Alexandrie ignorent, pour la plupart, l’unité des doctrines religieuses de l’antiquité, et la fraternité universelle des initiés sortis des grands sanctuaires. De là certaines lacunes impossibles à éviter dans l’histoire de cette évolution toute spéciale. Nous allons établir notre travail d’après le plan suivant :
21° Nous énumérerons de notre mieux les éléments. d’ac - tion existant à cette époque au point de vue de la transmission de l’initiation ; 2° Nous ferons nos efforts pour étudier la création des diverses religions sorties des centres d’initiation et pour chercher l’analogie possible avec la création du christianisme ; 3° Ceci nous amènera à étudier plusieurs des philosophies de cette époque et surtout le Gnosticisme. Résumons ce que nous avons dit précédemment au sujet de l’origine du Seplier. Les prêtres initiés d’Egypte conservaient la tradition d’une science profonde qui n’était livrée aux profanes qu’après de terribles épreuves, et qui ne pouvait être écrite qu’en caractères de la langue sacrée. Moïse, surnom d’un des initiés, prêtre d'Osiris, sélecte un peuple à qui il donne à garder, pour le transmettre de génération en génération, un livre écrit en caractères sacrés : le Seplier. Ce livre renfermait la plus grande partie de la science traditionnelle. Le sens véritable de ce livre est bientôt perdu pour le peuple juif, malgré les versions et les traductions qu’on en fait. — 616 — Une seule seele juive conserve encore, a l’époque qui nous occupe (c’est-à-dire vers la naissance du christianisme), la clef secrète du Sepher ou Kabbale. Cette secte est celle des Esse nions. Les deux autres sectes, les Pharisiens et les Saducéens, ne comprennent plus rien à l’œuvre de Moïse et font de la politique plus qu’autre chose.
3Jésus est juif. Il sortira des Esséniens .Mais n’anticipons pas et notons bien ce premier point: les Esséniens sont, en ce moment, les seuls dépositaires de la tradition ésotérique. Mais ces Esséniens ne sont en somme que les descendants intellectuels d’un prêtre Égyptien, Moïse. L’initiation donnée dans les mystères d’Osiris ou d’isis ne s’est pas arrêtée à Moïse. Elle a continué depuis; Orphée a répandu les enseignements reçus en Egypte dans toute la Grèce. Successivement Pythagore, Platon et tous les grands philosophes ou législateurs de l’Occident sont venus se retremper à la source originelle. Delà l’existence, parallèlement à la tradition juive et au Sepher (conservés dans une petite contrée, par un seul peuple), d’une tradition aussi profonde, quoique plus imagée : celle du Polythéisme grec. L’Egypte et ses mystères dominent encore, au moment de la naissance du christianisme, toute l’intellectualité de l’Occident. Les initiés, se reconnaissant à certains signes secrets, circulent à travers le monde, allant porter le mot d’ordre dansles temples de tous les dieux où enseignent les prêtres savants, représentants régionaux de l’Université d’Égypte désignée mystiquement sous le nom collectif d' Hermès Tri smegiste' .

We shall now see what use they will make of them. § 3. — THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIANITY Nothing is more difficult than to determine exactly the state of the tradition of Occult Science at the moment of the birth of Christianity. We shall nevertheless endeavor to establish this state as best we can, while preserving the greatest possible impartiality. Most of those who have concerned themselves with this question have approached this study only with a preconceived idea. Christian authors see everywhere nothing but divine influence, or the revolt of a vanquished Satan, which cannot satisfy us. — 61 o — The independent philosophers who have studied Gnosticism or the School of Alexandria are, for the most part, unaware of the unity of the religious doctrines of antiquity, and of the universal brotherhood of the initiates issuing from the great sanctuaries. Hence certain gaps, impossible to avoid, in the history of this altogether special evolution. We shall build our work according to the following plan:
21° We shall enumerate as best we can the elements of activity existing at that period from the point of view of the transmission of initiation; 2° We shall make every effort to study the creation of the various religions arising from the centers of initiation, and to seek the possible analogy with the creation of Christianity; 3° This will lead us to study several of the philosophies of that period, and above all Gnosticism. Let us sum up what we have said previously concerning the origin of the Sepher. The initiated priests of Egypt preserved the tradition of a profound science, which was delivered to the profane only after terrible trials, and which could be written only in the characters of the sacred language. Moses, the surname of one of the initiates, a priest of Osiris, selects a people to whom he gives, to keep and transmit from generation to generation, a book written in sacred characters: the Sepher. This book contained the greater part of the traditional science. The true meaning of this book was soon lost to the Jewish people, despite the versions and translations made of it. — 616 — A single Jewish sect still preserves, at the period that concerns us (that is to say, around the birth of Christianity), the secret key of the Sepher, or Kabbalah. This sect is that of the Essenes. The two other sects, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, no longer understand anything of the work of Moses, and occupy themselves with politics more than with anything else.
3Jesus is a Jew. He will come forth from the Essenes. But let us not get ahead of ourselves, and let us note carefully this first point: the Essenes are, at this moment, the sole depositaries of the esoteric tradition. But these Essenes are, in sum, only the intellectual descendants of an Egyptian priest, Moses. The initiation given in the mysteries of Osiris or of Isis did not stop with Moses. It continued afterward; Orpheus spread the teachings received in Egypt throughout all of Greece. Successively, Pythagoras, Plato, and all the great philosophers or lawgivers of the Occident came to steep themselves again at the original source. Hence the existence, alongside the Jewish tradition and the Sepher (preserved within a small territory, by a single people), of a tradition equally profound, though more figurative: that of Greek Polytheism. Egypt and its mysteries still dominate, at the moment of the birth of Christianity, the entire intellectual life of the Occident. The initiates, recognizing one another by certain secret signs, circulate throughout the world, carrying the watchword into the temples of all the gods, where the learned priests teach — regional representatives of the University of Egypt, mystically designated by the collective name of Hermes Trismegistus.
