1Since there exist more than three thousand volumes on Alchemy, we believe we must limit ourselves to giving the most important ones. Those who would wish to become practicing Alchemists — which I greatly pity them for — should acquaint themselves with all the masters, above all the works of Geber, Raymond Lulle, Basile, Valentin, Paracelse, and Van Helmont. CONCLUSION Having reached the end of our work, we hope to have attained the goal pursued: to demonstrate that the Philosopher's Stone is not merely possible; but that it has existed, and has given irrefutable proofs of its existence. — 682 — We ask serious people, who are moved by no bias and no preconceived idea, to carefully consider our assertions, to verify their authenticity in the original books — which is easy to do at the Bibliothèque Nationale — and to see whether these are irrefutable proofs, or merely simple conjectures devoid of any stable foundation. Love of truth alone has led us to defend the alchemists, these modest philosophers, too little known and too much slandered. May we incite some researcher more learned than ourselves to develop and extend this altogether particular kind of study.
2Moreover, we are witnessing a true renaissance of antiquity. The very curious phenomena of suggestion are coming to demolish many hasty conclusions, and perhaps the xxe century will at last see the constitution of the Synthesis, through the alliance of the positivist physics of the Occident with the idealist metaphysics of the Orient. May that day soon come when all philosophies shall return into the Unity of one and the same Science, when all cults shall return into the Unity of one and the same Faith, when Science and Faith shall give birth, through their alliance, to a single and synthetic Truth! CHAPTER XIV TRADITION IN MODERN TIMES FREEMASONRY. — ORIGIN. — SECRET AIMS. — CONSTITUTION. THE LEAGUE OF HIRAM AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE. § 1. — THE ALCHEMICAL CURRENT. — THE ROSE-CROIX. The alchemical current represents the central channel of transmission of Occult Science. The philosophers of Hermès study the different parts of esoterism, and some of them apply themselves particularly to the study of the sensible world; hence Alchemy.
3One should not believe, however, that Alchemy was the sole occupation of the hermetists. We find, indeed, a whole series of philosophers applying themselves particularly to the Kabbale1: such are Zedechias under Pépin le Bref, the initiated rabbi Jechiel under saint Louis, Albert le Grand toward the end of the xue century, Pic de la Mirandole, Reuchlin, Trithème, Agrippa, in the xve and xvic centuries. These names indicate the path followed by the kabbalistic tradition, which continues into the xvne century with Robert Fludd (1574-1637) and Henry More (1614-1687), to arrive at the secret societies of the beginning of the xviiic century, running parallel to alchemy properly so called. Alongside these philosophers, who transmitted from generation to generation the sacred deposit entrusted to them, 1. Voy. Éliphas Lévi, Histoire de la Magie et Stanislas de Guaita, Essai de Sciences maudites. — 684 — there exist various currents, issuing from men who went to be initiated at the very sources of the Tradition, and who then returned to reinvigorate, with their contribution, the central current that continues in the Occident. It is the same for hermetic philosophy as it was for Greece, whose great minds would undergo initiation in Egypt and would then return to infuse new intellectual blood into their homeland.
