122. Then He restored this envelope He had extracted from the very substance of Adam, to make it serve as the basis of that of Aïsha, his intellectual companion; and He brought her to him. • 23. And Adam, declaring his thought, said: this one is truly substance of my substance, and form of my form; and he called her Aisha, efficient volitional faculty, on account of the intellectual volitional principle Aïsh, from which she had been drawn in substance. 24. This is why intellectual man, Aïsh, must leave his father and his mother, and be reunited with his intellectual companion, Aïsha, his volitional faculty; so as to form with her but a single being under one and the same form. 25. Now, they were, the one and the other, entirely uncovered, without any corporeal veil to disguise their mental conceptions, universal Adam, and his volitional faculty Aïsha; and they caused each other no shame at all. — 458 — CHAPTER III The Extraction. v. 1. Meanwhile, Nahash, the original Attraction, Cupidity, that inner, appetent ardor, was the drawing passion of elemental life, the interior principle of Nature, the work of Ihôah. Now, this insidious Passion said to Aïsha, Adam's volitional faculty: why has He enjoined you, HIM-the-Gods, not to feed upon all the substance of the organic sphere? 2. And the volitional Faculty answered this covetous Ardor: we may, without fear, feed upon the substantial fruit of the organic enclosure.
23. But as for the fruit of the very substance which is at the center of this enclosure, He has told us, HIM-the-Gods: you shall not make food of it; you shall not draw your soul toward it, lest you inevitably bring about your own death. 4. Then Nahash, the original attraction, replied: no, it is not of death that you will inevitably die. 5. For, well knowing, HIM-the-Gods, that on the day you feed upon this substance, your eyes will be opened to the light, He fears that you may become like Him, knowing good and evil. 6. Aïsha, the volitional faculty, having considered that indeed this substance, mutually desired by the sense of taste and by that of sight, seemed good, and pleasantly flattered her with the hope of universalizing her intelligence, plucked from its fruit, ate of it; and gave also, intentionally, to her intellectual principle, Aïsh, to whom she was closely united; and he ate of it. 7. And suddenly their eyes opened likewise; and they knew that they were devoid of virtue, of their own light, sterile, laid bare in their obscure principle. They then caused a shadowy elevation to arise above them, a veil of mutual sadness and mourning; and made themselves transient garments.
38. Meanwhile they heard the very voice of Ihôah, the Being of beings, moving about in every direction within the organic enclosure, according to the spirituous breath of the light of day. Universal Adam hid himself from the sight of Ihôah, together with his volitional faculty, at the center of the very substance of the organic enclosure. 9. But Ihôah, the Being of beings, made Himself heard by Adam, and said to him: where has your will carried you? 10. And Adam answered: I heard your voice within this enclosure; and seeing that I was devoid of virtue, sterile, laid bare in my obscure principle, I hid myself. 11. And the Being of beings replied: who then taught you that you were thus devoid, if not the use of this very substance which I had expressly enjoined you not to feed upon at all? 12. Adam answered again: Aïsha, the volitional faculty You gave me to be my companion, it is she who offered me of this substance, and I fed upon it. 13. Then Ihôah, the Being of beings, said to the volitional Faculty: why have you done this? and Aïsha answered: Nahash, that insidious passion, caused my delirium, and I fed upon it. 14. And Ihôah, the Being of beings, said to Nahash, the original attraction: since you have caused this misfortune, you shall be an accursed passion within the animal species and among everything that lives in Nature: according to your tortuous inclination you shall act basely, and on elemental exhalations you shall feed every moment of your existence.
