1Raoul Glaber, chronicler of those distant ages, Adhémar de Chabannes, the acts of the synod of Orléans, the cartulary of Saint-Père de Chartres, the letter of Jean, monk of Fleury, to the bishop of Vich, allow us to set forth briefly the facts of this astonishing gnostic resurrection within the patrimonial domain of the Capets. V The Paulician Gnostics, then the Euchites, persecuted by the emperors of Byzantium, had been driven back into the Occident. Under the name of Cathars, Manichæans, Enthusiasts, they had formed secret communities in the north and in the south of Europe. At the beginning of the xie century, a woman of rare beauty and lofty intelligence, of Slavic, or Greco-Slavic, origin, driven out of Italy where she had exercised the apostolate of the Gnosis, came to Orléans, where her prestige gathered around her, in secret assemblies, the most pious and most learned among the members of the episcopal clergy. A man who died before 1017 in the odor of sanctity, and on whose tomb miracles occurred, the cantor of Sainte-Croix, the illustrious Théodat, adopted her doctrines. Héribert, scholaster of Saint-Pierre le Puellier, Lisois, Foucher, Étienne, chancellor of the bishop — 637 — of Orléans, clerics, nuns of Notre-Dame de Bonne-Nouvelle, women, eminent men, received from the beautiful saint the consolamentum, the laying on of hands, and the doctrine.
2For a long time, the gnostic church met in secret, sometimes at the homes of these ecclesiastics, sometimes in the quarries of Saint-Vincent, sometimes in the cellars of the Châtelet quarter. Officially, the adepts followed the Roman cult and went about their business. Théodat sat in his stall at the Basilica. Héribert taught in his school. Étienne had even directed the conscience of Queen Constancia, wife of Robert. Lisois occupied the chair of the great school of Orléans. The beautiful saint died. Théodat followed her closely. She was buried in the cathedral, and the people honored her as a saint. VI What did the woman Apostle teach? The Gnosis. The doctrine of the Éons, such as the New Testament contains it within its exoteric envelope, such as saint Paul and saint Jean preached it, such as the genius of Basilide, the harmonious eloquence of Valentin, the fair word of Marcias had taught it, such as Sergius and Basilius had repeated it after them. God, the absolute principle, source of the Good, from whom all emanates. The Éon Iahveh, gone astray far from the sacred plérome, creating the material world whence come evil, suffering, death, sin. She taught, the deceased, the Éon Jésus, to redeem this poor world. He was to lead back to His father, to God, to l'ABIME, the Pure, the Elect, the Pneumatics, those filled with the Holy Spirit.
3She condemned baptism by water, the real presence, the efficacy of works, the hierarchy, second marriages, the sacraments. She wished to restore worship in spirit and in truth. "Behold what our law is," she would cry, "to leave the world, to master the flesh, to live by one's labor, to injure no one, to love one's neighbor. If we observe this law, there is no need of baptism. If we violate it, no baptism will save us!" — 638 — VII After the death of Théodat, Étienne had become the uncontested head and doctor of the Gnosis. 8a sainteté (a scanning garble for "Sa sainteté," i.e., "His holiness"), his learning, his benevolence were renowned throughout the diocese. The Doctrine spread like a river. Souls in love with the ideal slaked their thirst there. Suddenly the storm stirred these calm and profound waters.
