11° What is the Kabbalah and what is its antiquity? 2° What are the teachings of the Kabbalah: On God; On Man; On the Universe? 3° What is the influence of the Kabbalah on philosophy across the ages? 11 (a scanning misread of "It") would take a whole volume to treat such a subject as it deserves; but we must content ourselves with what we have and confine ourselves to the indications strictly necessary for that purpose. what is the kabbalah and what is its antiquity? Placing himself on the strict ground of facts established by solid scholarship, M. Franck defines the Kabbalah thus: "A doctrine that has more than one point of resemblance with those of Plato and Spinoza; which, in its form, rises at times to the majestic tone of religious poetry; which arose on the same soil and at nearly the same time as Christianity; which, over a period of twelve centuries, with no other proof than the hypothesis of an ancient tradition, with no other apparent motive than the desire to penetrate more intimately into the meaning of the sacred books, developed and spread in the shadow of the deepest mystery: such is what one finds, once purged of all alloy, in the original monuments and in the oldest remains of the Kabbalah." On the first part of this definition all occultists agree: the Kabbalah does indeed constitute a traditional doctrine, as its very name indicates1.
2But we differ entirely in opinion from M. Franck on the question of the origin of this tradition. The university critic cannot depart in his work from certain established rules, the chief of which is not to base the origin of the doctrines he studies on anything but documents that are, for him, well authenticated, without concerning himself with the more or less interested claims of the partisans of the doctrine studied. This is the method followed by M. Franck in his historical research on the subject of the Kabbalah. He determines the origin as best he can i. "It appears, according to the most famous rabbis, that Moses himself, foreseeing the fate his book was to undergo and the false interpretations that would be given to it in the course of time, had recourse to an oral law, which he gave by word of mouth to trustworthy men whose fidelity he had tested, and which he charged them to transmit in the secrecy of the sanctuary to other men who, transmitting it in turn from age to age, thus caused it to reach the most distant posterity. This oral law, which modern Jews still flatter themselves they possess, is called Kabbalah, from a Hebrew word which means that which is received, that which comes from elsewhere, that which is passed from hand to hand." Fabre d'Olivet. Langue hébraïque restituée [Hebrew Language Restored], p. dy. — 536 — of the two fundamental works of the doctrine: the Sepher Jesirah and the Zohar, and infers from this very origin that of the Kabbalah as a whole.
3The occultist need not take these constraints into account. An ancient symbol is for him a monument as authentic and as precious as a book, and oral tradition can only transmit formulas of dogmatic form which reason and science must subsequently check and verify. Wronski defines dogmas as porisms, that is to say, problems to be demonstrated — which is why we must first set down the traditional dogmas, but without ever admitting them before having scientifically verified them. Now, we shall see what occult tradition teaches us on the subject of the origin of Esotericism and, consequently, of the Kabbalah itself, positing as a problem to be demonstrated what science has not yet been able to clarify, but indicating on the other hand the points where it comes to confirm the conclusions of the oral or written tradition of Occult Science. Each continent saw a flora and fauna progressively generated, crowned by a human race. The continents were born successively in such a way that the one which contained the human race destined to succeed the existing one was born at the moment when the latter was in full civilization. Several great civilizations thus succeeded one another on our planet in the following order:
