* *
A CEUX QUI, FATIGUÉS d’aPPRENDRE,
DÉSIRENT ENFIN SAVOIR.

Occult Science! Is it then anything other than a source of reveries for weak minds, or of consolations for broken souls? That is what we must see.
If we cast an overall glance at this occult Science as we have set it forth, what shall we see?
The prolegomena of our work show us the effective existence of a body of scientific doctrine in antiquity, and we can do justice to those ancients, still so maligned.
In the first part, the esoteric doctrine appears to us with its train of bold hypotheses, which can find precious support in our experimental Sciences, far from being in opposition to the data of those sciences.
We follow the transmission of this body of doctrine in the second part; starting from Egypt with Moses, we see the Kabbalah pass intact through peoples and revolutions; we find the hermetic teaching again among the Gnostics, at the school of Alexandria, among the alchemists, in the Order of the Temple, in the Rose-Croix, and finally — how deformed! — in present-day
— 1039 —
Freemasonry. Truly occult societies nonetheless exist which still possess the tradition in full; I appeal here to one of the most learned among Western adepts, to my own master in practice, Peter Davidson.
The aim of this occult Science is the alliance of Science and Faith toward a single aspiration: synthetic Truth. The third part enters the domain of the Invisible, where scientific data come to support the strange assertions of Magic concerning the evocation of the dead, the mysteries of birth, and the causes of social inequalities that the human will can always overcome. — Finally, a series of facts and figures shows how greatly the human mind concerns itself, in our own day, with this occult Science and with the Societies that pursue its study and application.
We have been accused of un-occulting the occult. Experience has shown us that those who 11e are not meant to understand do not understand. — In 1853, the un-occulting of the occult was undertaken far better than we can do it today; the enterprise failed because minds were not ready to understand it. Today times have changed, and we are still only the free instruments of an invisible force, as powerful as it is beneficent, which drives every school to reveal the principles of its knowledge and to strive in emulation for the advent of the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.
Numerous currents of ideas, apparently opposed, pursue in parallel one and the same goal. These very oppositions are a pledge of success, a guarantee against somnolence. No school that remains shut up within its own sectarianism can effectively aid the ge1040 —
neral movement. Partial grouping is called for; this effort has been attempted.
Whatever the future of our work may be, we have the conscience of having done our duty to the end. Science, infused everywhere, will know how to do justice to every sectarianism, and Morality, resting at last on positive foundations, will perhaps lead peoples toward goals other than the refined extermination of the poor by the rich, of intellectuals by armies, and of armies by ever more perfected engines of war.
Let us group our efforts, let us boldly seek other methods than those which lead to the making of graduated parrots, useless or harmful to the community, and no doubt we shall one day be able to inscribe on the pediment of the new edifice:
TO THOSE WHO, WEARY OF LEARNING, WISH AT LAST TO KNOW.
