1Thus we shall see that every perfect man is regenerated, or born twice, and that each time he draws his origin from the center of the cross, or from the Union of the male and the female; first materially, taking root below and drawing from the earth the materials needed to form and nourish the body; then, from the vital atmosphere 1. 'Yesterday's curtains fall, tomorrow's curtains rise, but yesterday and tomorrow are both.' (Sartor Resartus.) — 24 1 — (described on the Plate as the vivifying spirit) he draws the Jivatma, or vitality, which gives him life, and from that he builds the astral form that exists before the outer body becomes visible. Every molecule of matter, however small it may be, possesses a vital spirit, or partakes of this Jivatma, which is in no way the same as the divine spirit of man, the Atma, or the seventh Principle, this latter being 'God.' Without the third principle, the LINGA SHARIRA, or astral form, which animals possess just as man does, there would be no outer bodies at all, for it is evident that the particles or the atoms of matter could not build themselves up without having a form to build upon.
2'The bare grain, whether of wheat or of some other seed; but God gives it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body' (I Cor. xv, 38). The third principle is therefore the same for all, for the particles of matter require a form, whether of man or of animal: to every seed its own body. 'There is an animal body, there is a spiritual body. The first man, being of the earth, is earthly; and the second man, who is the Lord, is from heaven. But that is not first which is spiritual, but that which is animal; and that which is spiritual comes afterward (I Cor. xv, 44, 46, 47). To become spiritual, to become the 'Lord of heaven,' man must be born a second time, born from the center of the cross, from the center of Love, from the union of the male and female principles, but this time he is born of the spiritual Union of these principles within his own nature. It is the womb of the Virgin, in our fifth principle, Manas, or 'the human soul,' that conceives directly of the 16 — 242 — Holy Spirit. It is the seed of the woman, or the feminine principle in man, that is destined to 'crush the head of the serpent' — in other words, to overcome materiality through spirituality.
3When this virgin soul is ready to receive it, the seed will take root and germinate. Then the son of man will be 'lifted up,' and, like the tree of life whose branches turn toward heaven, he will draw his nourishment from above, from the spiritual light poured forth by the universal soul and dispensed by the divine Spirit, our eternal father-mother, 'God.' Until the moment when the primary substances are organized, man does not exist as a personality; consequently, he is born first of all physically, and his lower principles draw their material subsistence from the earth and take root below. 11 (a scanning misread of "Il," French for "It") must then be that he 'be born again' spiritually. The spiritual being must take root at the center of love (will), and, in order that goodness, wisdom, and universal love may take the place of self-love, he must rise toward heaven, drawing his intellectual nourishment from the understanding and the nourishment of his heart from the spiritual source that never fails. There is a spiritual state that is not indicated on our table, because it does not fall among the seven; but, just as Nirvana stands above and beyond these, being the supreme state of the Divinity, its antithesis, called in Sanskrit 'Avitchi,'1 may be defined as standing below and beyond in the opposite direction, if it were possible to localize a State. ■
