2Une accusation qu’on fait souvent aux théories de l’occultisme, c’est cette tendance à faire entrer tous les phénomènes de la nature sous la dépendance d’un chiffre particulier. Cette objection aurait quelque valeur si la Science occulte n’admettait qu’un seul chiffre, le 2, le 3 ou le 4, comme règle unique et toujours observée des phénomènes naturels. Il n’en est pas ainsi. Chaque nombre a une signification spéciale et peut être appliqué dans certains cas. Ainsi, l’homme physique est bien composé de trois segments : ventre, poitrine et tête. Chacun des membres est bien aussi composé de trois segments (bras, avant-bras, main, etc.) ; mais il y a cinq doigts à chaque main et sept trous à la tête (2 yeux, 2 oreilles, 2 narines, 1 bouche). De même, il y a une foule de couleurs dans le monde et ces couleurs se ramènent toutes à trois fondamentales : le rouge, le jaune et le bleu. Les trois principes de l’homme obéissent à la même loi et peuvent être décomposés en plusieurs autres principes, ainsi que le montre Amaravella dans une série d’études sur la Constitution du Microcosme parues dans les numéros 8,9 et 10 du Lotus. — 206 — Le nombre sept est généralement assigné aux éléments composant l’homme. Ce nombre a été généralisé outre mesure dans ces derniers temps par un auteur théosophique qui a voulu tout expliquer grâce au septénaire dans deux indigestes volumes écrits sans méthode et sans connaissances scientifiques sérieuses: la Doctrine Secrète.
3Sans aller jusqu’aux subtilités des sept sous-races de sous-races humaines ou des sept états de la Matière considérés ésotériquement comme la véritable explication des sept planètes, il faut savoir que la division de l’homme en sept principes éclaire d’un jour tout nouveau certaines questions d’anthropologie, de psychologie et de religion. ★ * * Les sept principes de l’homme sont donc des subdivisions des trois principes primitifs. Sur quoi portent ces subdivisions? Quel est leur caractère? C’est ce que nous allons voir. Rapports des principes et des nombres. Le Corps, la Vie et l’Esprit, anatomiquement générés par le Ventre, la Poitrine et la Tète, représentent en somme un seul principe diversement évolué. Si nous voulions les désigner par des nombres , il nous faudrait trouver trois chiffres représentant l’unité de différents degrés. Or, l’emploi des méthodes de calcul pythagoriciennes, méthodes totalement perdues de nos jours et que nous avons reconstituées un des premiers, permet de voir que*l, 4 et 7 représentent bien l’unité à différents degrés. En effet, en addition théosophique, 4 = 1 — 2 — 3 +4—10; 10=1+0=1; 7=1+2+3+4+5+6+7=28; 28=2+8=10=1. 207 — Voilà donc 3 nombres: 1, 4 et 7, qui représentent le même nombre 1 diversement considéré. If what precedes has been well understood, one will see that man may be regarded as composed essentially of three principles: the body, the life, the will; or, the body, the spirit, and the soul, according to the schools.
2An accusation often made against the theories of occultism is this tendency to make all the phenomena of nature dependent upon a particular number. This objection would carry some weight if Occult Science admitted only a single number — 2, 3, or 4 — as the sole and always-observed rule of natural phenomena. This is not the case. Each number has a special meaning and may be applied in certain cases. Thus physical man is indeed composed of three segments: belly, chest, and head. Each of the limbs is likewise composed of three segments (arm, forearm, hand, etc.); but there are five fingers on each hand and seven openings in the head (2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 nostrils, 1 mouth). Likewise, there is a host of colors in the world, and these colors all come down to three fundamental ones: red, yellow, and blue. The three principles of man obey the same law and can be broken down into several further principles, as Amaravella shows in a series of studies on the Constitution of the Microcosm published in issues 8, 9, and 10 of the Lotus. — 206 — The number seven is generally assigned to the elements composing man. This number has been generalized to excess in recent times by a theosophical author who has sought to explain everything by means of the sevenfold principle, in two indigestible volumes, written without method and without serious scientific knowledge: the Secret Doctrine.
3Without going as far as the subtleties of the seven sub-races of human sub-races, or of the seven states of Matter regarded esoterically as the true explanation of the seven planets, it must be known that the division of man into seven principles sheds an entirely new light on certain questions of anthropology, of psychology, and of religion. ★ * * The seven principles of man are thus subdivisions of the three primitive principles. On what do these subdivisions bear? What is their character? This is what we shall now see. Relations of the principles and the numbers. The Body, the Life, and the Spirit, anatomically generated by the Belly, the Chest, and the Head, represent, all told, a single principle variously evolved. If we wished to designate them by numbers, we would have to find three figures representing unity at different degrees. Now, the use of the Pythagorean methods of calculation — methods totally lost in our day, and which we have been among the first to reconstitute — allows us to see that *l, 4, and 7 indeed represent unity at different degrees.
