I. Décomposer la figure en ses éléments ;

— 965 —

II. Voir la situation qu occupent ces éléments dans la figure les uns par rapport, aux autres ;

III.

I

La Matière domine l'Esprit ;

Le Mal est supérieur au Bien ;

This cross, image of man, unites the center of the Universe (the human soul) with God himself.

Such is the explanation of the universal pantacle of Martinism.

3. — EXPLANATION OF THE PANTACLES.

Explanation of the Pantacles. — These figures, which seem at first sight so mysterious, nevertheless become, in most cases, relatively easy to explain. Here are the most general rules that can be assigned to this explanation:

I. Decompose the figure into its elements;

— 965 —

II. See the position occupied by these elements in the figure, one with respect to another;

III. Seek the science to which the pantacle is most closely related.

I

DECOMPOSITION OF THE FIGURE INTO ITS ELEMENTS

Every pantacle, however complex it may appear, can be decomposed into a certain number of elements pertaining to qualitative geometry (see chap. iv).

We shall now review a certain number of elements, thanks to which the work will be found greatly abridged.

But first I wish to give a device that should always be employed when the determination of the elements is difficult, namely: to count them. They will then be found arranged by threes, by sevens, or by twelves.

If they are arranged by threes, the idea they contain is that of Active-Passive-Neutral, and of its consequences.

If they are arranged by sevens, they relate either to the seven planets or to the colors of the hermetic work, and the 3rd consideration (the science to which the figure relates) then illuminates the description.

Finally, if they are arranged by twelves, they express every zodiacal movement, and that of the Sun in particular.

This difficulty set aside, let us look at some of the principal elements.

The cross expresses the opposition of forces two by two, so as to give rise to the Quintessence. It is the image of the action of the Active upon the Passive, of Spirit upon Matter.

Naturally the head dominates the body, Spirit dominates Matter; when sorcerers wish to express their ideas in a pantacle, they formulate their imprecations by destroying the harmony of the

966

figure; they place the cross head downward, and thereby express the following ideas:

Matter dominates Spirit;

Evil is superior to Good;

Darkness is preferable to Light.

Man must let himself be guided solely by his basest instincts and do everything to destroy his intelligence, etc., etc.

We know that the cross expresses these ideas because it is formed of a vertical bar (image of the active) and a horizontal bar (image of the passive), with all the analogies attached to these terms.

The square expresses the opposition of active and passive forces so as to constitute a balance; that is why it is particularly the image of form.

The triangle expresses different ideas according to the positions its apex takes.

In itself the triangle is formed of two opposed lines, images of the 2 and of antagonism, which would go on losing themselves in the Infinite without ever meeting, were it not that a third line comes to unify the two and thereby bring them back to Unity, constituting the first closed figure.

The triangle, apex upward, represents everything that rises from below upward.

— 967 —

It is particularly the symbol of Fire, of the hot 1.

« It is the hierarchical mystery of Light and the radical Matter of Elemental Fire; it is the formal principle of the Sun, of the Moon, of the stars, and of all natural Life.

« This primitive light carries upward all the phenomena of its virtue, because, being purified by the Unity of the uncreated Light, it always springs toward the Unity from which it borrows its ardor 2. »

The triangle, apex downward, represents everything that descends from above downward.

It is particularly the symbol of Water, of the Moist.

« It is the supracelestial Water, or the metaphysical Matter of the World, issued from the prototype Spirit; the Mother of all things, which from the Binary produces the Quaternary.

« All its movements tend downward, and hence it individualizes the particular matters and the bodies of all things by giving them existence 3. »
