a 2 Moyen principal. Sociétés secrètes.
b 2 Moyen accessoire. Usage des œuvres mystiques.
' Note sur les Buts.
a 2 Principal means. Secret societies.
b 2 Accessory means. Use of mystical works.
Note on the Ends.
a * The principal end of the mystical association results immediately from the theoretical determination of mysticism, such as we have given it above, as consisting in the mystical limitation of absolute reality, observing that limitation forms in general the neutralization between the privation and the granting of reality! And it is in pursuing this principal end that mystical societies, in order to take part in creation, cultivate supernatural sentiments and arts such as autopsy, teletic poetry, hermetic philosophy, magnetic healings, palingenesis, etc., and certain mysteries of physical generation, etc.
a2 Secret societies.
Being unable either to practice or to discuss publicly the supernatural efforts that the mystical association makes to take part in creation, because, at the very least, the public would laugh at it, and being unable either openly to direct earthly destinies because governments would oppose it, this mysterious association can act only by means of secret societies. Thus, as it is now conceived, it is on the stage of mysticism that all the secret societies which have existed and which still exist upon our globe are born, and which, all moved by such mysterious springs, have dominated and continue, despite governments, to dominate the world.
929 —
These secret societies, created as they become needed, are split into distinct and apparently opposed bands, professing respectively, and in turn, the most contrary opinions of the day, so as to direct separately, and with confidence, every party — political, religious, economic and literary — and they are linked, so as to receive a common direction, to an unknown center where is hidden the powerful spring which thus seeks invisibly to move all the scepters of the earth.
For example, the two political parties, the liberals, human right, and the royalists, divine right, who today divide the world, have respectively their secret societies from which they receive their impulse and direction; and, without their being able to suspect it, these secret societies, the one as much as the other, are themselves, through the skill of a few leaders, moved and directed according to the views of a supreme and unknown committee which governs the world.
b 2 Curious citation on living Providence.
Condition of possibility of mystical works. This condition of possibility consists in an elevated order of life, which we have already mentioned above, announcing that we would designate it by the name of vital stasis. Everything thus reduces to knowing to what point human nature, that is to say the nature of the rational being on earth, on our globe, is capable of raising its vital stasis, so as to rise to the regions of mystical works. And this decisive question can be resolved only a posteriori, or by the fact.
Two major consequences follow from this for philosophy. The first is that, through the presentiment man has of this mysterious vocation of his nature — a vocation which has finally just been legitimized by reason — he cannot absolutely refuse all faith in mystical works; and that, as a consequence of this human disposition, countless rogues and impostors, abusing so ineffaceable a credulity, have ceaselessly deceived men with pretended mystical works.
The second philosophical consequence is that no work of mysticism, were it of the slightest value — for example a simple fact of eleutheric magnetism — ought to be admitted as such except with the most severe criticism, and that, in order to obviate serious inconveniences, it is more profitable to human reason to fail to recognize genuine mystical works, if any exist upon our globe, than to give itself over to too great a credulity in their regard.
