1One may raise a few criticisms against M. Franck concerning the manner in which he presents the teachings of the Kabbalah. Indeed, although the kabbalistic data on each particular subject are analyzed with marvelous scholarship, no information is given about the system as a whole considered synthetically. For example, after reading chapter iv, entitled: Opinions of the Kabbalists on the World, the reader learns certain points of the tradition concerning the Angels, Astrology, the unity of God and of the Universe; but it is impossible, from this data, to form a general idea of the constitution of the Cosmos. We shall endeavor to present to our readers as clear a summary as possible of these kabbalistic traditions, so well analyzed moreover by our author. To be comprehensible on such arduous subjects, we shall begin our analysis with the study of Man, more easily appreciable for the generality of minds, and we shall approach only at the very end the metaphysical data concerning God. 1" Teachings of the Kabbalah on Man. The Kabbalah teaches first of all that man represents exactly within himself the constitution of the whole Universe. Hence the name of Microcosm, or Little World, given to man, in opposition to the name Macrocosm, or Great World, given to the Universe.
2When it is said that Man is the image of the Universe, that does not mean that the Universe is a vertebrate animal. It is of constitutive principles, analogous and not similar, that one means to speak. Thus cells of very varied forms and constitution group together in Man to form organs, such as the stomach, the liver, the heart, the brain, etc... These organs likewise group together among themselves to form systems that give rise to functions. (Grouping of the lungs, the heart, the arteries and the veins to form the circulatory system; grouping of the cerebral lobes, the marrow, the sensory nerves and the motor nerves to form the nervous system, etc.).
3Now then, according to the method of Occult Science — analogy — the objects that will follow the same law in the Universe will be analogous to the organs and systems in Man. Nature shows us beings of very varied forms and constitution (mineral beings, vegetable beings, animal beings, etc.) grouping together to form planets. These planets group together among themselves to form solar systems. The interplay of the Planets and their satellites gives rise to the Life of the Universe, just as the interplay of the organs gives rise to the Life of Man. The organ and the Planets are therefore two analogous beings, that is to say, acting according to the same law; yet God knows whether the Heart and the Sun are of different forms! These examples show us the application of kabbalistic data to our exact sciences; they form part of a comprehensive work in progress for nearly five years now, and which is far from being finished. Let us therefore limit these developments on analogy here, and return to the constitution of the Microcosm, now that we know why Man is so called.
