L 'Univers zi Dieu sont étudiés par quelques écoles, mais 1. 1To this question, 40,000 members of every school, gathered by their delegates in a Congress in September 1889, have answered in the affirmative. The ancient poets, the holy books, show us the possibility of the evocation of the manes. But great precautions must be taken to avoid mistaking the reflection of one's own personal ideas for a manifestation of the deceased's soul. Occultism teaches that, generally speaking, the being who wishes to enter into communication with a deceased person must put himself into the same psychic state as the one he is evoking — that is, must give within himself predominance to the astral world over the physical world. An initiate enters the astral consciously, through auto-hypnotism; the uninitiated makes use of an unconscious intermediary, a being magnetically put to sleep: a subject, or medium. — 324 — Every magnetically sleeping being puts itself in relation with the astral body of the consultant, and consequently with the brain of this consultant. And so the first of the dangers to avoid is that of mistaking, for a communication from the deceased, the reflection of your own ideas in this psychic mirror that a medium is. Science must be true, and not sentimental; and so it has no regard for the argument that communication with the dead cannot be discussed because it constitutes a 'very consoling' idea.
2In the middle of the nineteenth century, a rudimentary philosophy was formed under the influence of the remarkable works of a former schoolteacher: Allan Kardec. The new doctrine took the name of spiritism. In antiquity, all the practices of occultism were enclosed within the study of Magic. This science comprised several divisions, corresponding to various orders of study, of which only two are known today: the action of human life upon man and Nature (present-day magnetism), and the evocation of the dead (present-day spiritism). To wish to teach that magnetism or spiritism encompasses the whole of Occult Science, as certain fanatics claim to do, is as ridiculous as to claim that Chemistry alone constitutes the whole of Science. The study of Occult Science furnishes, on the evocation of the dead, data completely unknown to most present-day spiritists, in addition to those they are beginning to know. As our assertions might give rise to some polemics in the spiritist press, we shall insist on this point. We are trying, in this book, to sum up as best we can — 325 — the teachings of Occult Science on the various ideas that present themselves to us. 11 (a scanning misread of "Il," French for "It") is thus of the greatest usefulness to define clearly everything relating to spiritism.
3First of all, let us say a few words about spiritism and its theories, and then we shall set forth the ideas of Occult Science touching these same questions. Following certain phenomena, inexplicable by the usual scientific data, produced in America around 1846, a new philosophical theory on the state of the soul after death came into being. A French schoolteacher, Allan Kardec, reduced the principal elements of this theory into a veritable encyclopedia made up of his various works.l (a scanning misread of “l.,” an abbreviation mark, not a digit) The works of Allan Kardec are remarkable for the simplicity of the philosophical doctrine expounded, and for the clarity with which points always obscure to grasp in the specialized books are set forth. Here is the summary of the spiritist doctrine, such as we made it for the volume of the Spiritist and Spiritualist Congress of 1889. SPIRITIST SCHOOLS To properly grasp the data of each school on the subject of the phenomena produced, a few preliminary considerations are indispensable. Spiritism sets forth a well-defined philosophical system, as, moreover, do the schools of occultism. Man, his past, his reason for being, and his future — such are the principal subjects this spiritist philosophy addresses. The Universe and God are studied by a few schools, but 1.
