1In Spring, Nature seems to be born anew under the influence of the kisses of the Orb of Day. In Summer, its productive ardor is at its maximum; in Autumn comes the season of the harvests, the season of general calm; and finally, in Winter, everything seems dead forever. The Sun is cold and has no more beneficent action. Such, in a few lines, is the general description of the phenomenon. This March of the Sun is a manifestation of the general Law of evolution, and we shall now see how the mythologists could have taken, in place of this fact, any other fact whatever, reproducing analogically the same law. Let us sum up the facts presented to us over the course of the seasons: 1. Birth of the Sun (Its growth) 2. Power of the Sun (Maximum effect) 3. Decrease of the Sun's strength 4. Cessation of the Sun's beneficent effects. — (Apparent death) 5. Return of spring, etc. Spring Summer Autumn Winter One may therefore represent the seasons by a circle, thus. 73 — The first half of the circle indicates the period of growth, the second half the period of decrease. The theory of the Solar Myth would be true if this law applied only to the sun. But need one meditate very long to see that it applies just as exactly to human life? Childhood is spring, youth summer, ripe age autumn, and old age winter.
2It is not a matter here of a poetic comparison; it is a matter of a true law, the law of evolution, whose application we shall find everywhere. The same circle can represent this evolution by changing the names. This law can be applied to a host of other facts. Let us note in passing the evolution of a day, which reproduces these same phases, like every possible evolution, in its four periods. One may likewise consider, under the same aspect, the evolution of the month in four lunar phases, the morning corresponding — 74 — to the first quarter, midday to the full moon, evening to the last quarter, and night to the new moon. Everywhere we shall see a period of growth and a period of decrease; such is the true formula of the law of evolution, applicable to 'Progress' as to everything else. By considering the March of the Sun, we can therefore discover the general law of evolution applicable to everything. But we could just as well discover this law by considering human Life, or the March of the Moon in forming the month, or the March of the Earth in forming the day. We could just as well draw this general law from one fact as from another, and, what is more, a single one of these facts suffices to give it to us.
3But it would be ridiculous to claim that one of these facts has more importance than the others; and this law — 'the March of the Sun' — is no more the key to mythology than the March of the Moon or that of the Earth. — The true key, once again, is not a fact, it is a law, and it is this law of evolution that the ancients symbolized in all its details in their marvelous and learned mythology. The year, human life, the day, the month are thus analogous, all following one and the same law. It will occur to no one that they are 'alike' — an error one must guard carefully against in applying analogy. In every fact, however minor it may be, there is thus a general law hidden, just as, according to the mystic masters, there is God in every man. But to find this general law, one must not stop at — 75 — detailed observations, as the following figure shows us. The facts A, 15, G, D (a scanning misread of "A, B, C, D"), situated at the base of the triangle, show no similarity among themselves. If one stops at the secondary laws situated at the middle of the triangle, one will not be able to unite them either; but if one climbs to the apex, one will see that there all come to converge, all are united in a single point. This point of union of all the facts is the general law, the unity that is in the all (εν το παν).
