Cinq, c’est le sceau duquel il scella la hauteur quand il la contempla au-dessus de lui. Il la scella du nom IEV (in*). Six, c’est le sceau duquel il scella la profondeur quand il la contempla au-dessous de lui. Il la scella du nom IYE (HV). Sept, c’est le sceau duquel il scella l’Orient quand il le contempla devant lui. Il le scella du nom EIY (TH). Huit, c’est le sceau duquel il scella l’Occident quand il le contempla derrière lui. 2Les vingt-deux lettres sont constituées par trois mères, sept doubles et douze simples. Les trois mères sont : E M e S c’est-à-dire l’Air, l’Eau et le Feu. L’Eau M (O) muette, le Feu S (1î/) sifflant, l’Air A (tf) intermédiaire entre les deux comme le langage de la loi OCH (p!"i) tient le milieu entre le mérite et la culpabilité. A ces vingt-deux lettres il donna une forme, un poids, en les mêlant et les transformant de diverses manières, il créa l’âme de tout ce qui est à créer ou le sera. Les vingt-deux lettres sont sculptées dans la voix, gravées dans l’Air, placées dans la prononciation en cinq endroits : dans le gosier, dans le palais, dans la langue, dans les dents et dans les lèvres. Les vingt-deux lettres, les fondements, sont placées sur la sphère au nombre de 231. Le cercle qui les contient peut tourner directement, et alors il signifie bonheur, ou en rétrograde, et alors il signifie le contraire. 2The twenty-two letters are constituted by three mothers, seven doubles, and twelve simples. The three mothers are: E M e S, that is to say Air, Water, and Fire. Water, M (O), mute; Fire, S (1î/), hissing; Air, A (tf), intermediate between the two, just as the language of the law OCH (p!"i) holds the middle between merit and guilt. To these twenty-two letters He gave a form, a weight, and by mixing them and transforming them in various ways, He created the soul of everything that is to be created, or shall be. The twenty-two letters are sculpted in the voice, engraved in the Air, placed in pronunciation in five places: in the throat, in the palate, in the tongue, in the teeth, and in the lips. The twenty-two letters, the foundations, are placed upon the sphere to the number of 231. The circle which contains them can turn directly, in which case it signifies happiness, or in retrograde, in which case it signifies the contrary. This is why He made them weighty and permuted them, Aleph (S) with all and all with Aleph, Beth (H) with all and all with Beth, etc... It is by this means that 231 gates are born, and it is found that all idioms and all creatures derive from this formation, and that consequently all creation proceeds from a single name. Thus it was that He made (ntf), that is to say the Alpha and the Omega, which shall never change nor grow old1. The sign of all this is twenty-two totals and a single body. CHAPTER III
3Three mothers E M e S (U?Di<) are the foundations. They represent the scale-pan of affirmation, the scale-pan of contradiction, and the language of examination OCH (pii), which stands in the middle.
