1° D’une part les qualités spéciales attribuées à ce nom;

§ 3. THE DIVINE NAMES

If the reader has clearly understood the data set forth above, if he knows well that each letter has three ends and expresses a hieroglyph, a number, and an idea, he knows the foundations of the Kabbalah. It will now suffice for us to concern ourselves with the combinations.

If each of the letters is an effective power, the grouping of these letters according to certain mystical rules gives rise to active centers of force which can act efficaciously when set in motion by the will of man.

Hence the ten divine names.

Each of these names expresses a special attribute of God, that is, an active law of Nature and a universal center of action.

As all divine manifestations, that is, all acts and all beings, are bound to one another just as the cells of man are bound to him, to set one of these manifestations in motion is to create a current of real action that will reverberate throughout the whole Universe; just as a sensation perceived by man at any point of his skin makes his whole organism vibrate.

The study of the divine names thus comprises:

1° On the one hand, the special qualities attributed to this name;

2° On the other, the relations of this name with the rest of Nature.

We shall take up these points one after another.

First of all, let us enumerate these ten names found on every talisman and in every formula of evocation.

We place the French letters beneath the Hebrew letters, reversed, to indicate the direction of reading Hebrew.
