1I. That is to say Hermes (scientific center) possessing the three orders of Sciences (University) — science of facts, science of laws, and science of principles — whereas the regional faculties possessed only one or two of these orders of science (see chap. ier). (517 Apuleius, around 140 after Jesus Christ, would still be able to have himself initiated into the mysteries of Osiris, proof of their continued existence at that period. If the Essenes, derived by Moses from the primitive stock, still possess the tradition, the primitive center itself, the University of Egypt, also possesses this tradition, which it has diffused as best it could throughout the Occident, thanks to Orpheus and his disciples. Such are the two elements present at the moment when the Essenes will strive to save their sacred deposit through the creation of Christianity. This leads us to say a few words about the creation of a religion, such as it may be conceived according to the data of Occult Science. Regarding the method of transmission of the tradition, we have shown that every complete teaching was composed of three parts: 1° An exoteric part, generally mythological; 2° An esoteric part; 3° A cult forming the link between these two parts.
2An immediate source of irreparable errors is the confusion of these three parts. For polytheism, this error need not be feared as yet, since the existence of an esoterism is still unknown and the cult is barely studied; exoterism, or the mythological part, is thus alone known. Now, the origin of this mythology is, as we have seen, the materialization of principles dressed up as human figures for the needs of the legend. The ancients often wrote history according to a similar method. Taking no account of individuals, they recounted the social evolution of the principles embodied by those individuals, writing the history of despotism and the origin — 618 — of a people without concerning themselves with the successive number of despots who had embodied this principle, and the rest I1 (a scanning garble for "à l'avenant," i.e., "accordingly"). 11 (a scanning garble for "Il," i.e., "It") suffices to consider attentively the origin of almost all religions to find there the application of the same method. A creator, a man truly deified by the genius he displays in the realization of his idea, lays the foundations of a new cult, which must have a threefold aim — scientific, social, and religious. The history of this man could not be told day by day as we do in our own time. Everything being governed by the law of analogy, it is the esoteric principle, more or less elevated, revealed through initiation, that is described in its evolution.
3This is why the beginning and the end of the story of Moses are purely mythical. The same is true for the story of Orpheus. The same is also true, whatever one may seem to claim, for the story of Jesus. People have refused to see the exoteric, mythological part of Christianity, and have wished to have accepted the existence of a mysterious star guiding three magi — one red, one black, and one white — toward a newborn infant who already speaks. 11 (a scanning garble for "Il," i.e., "He") was born of a virgin on the 25th of December. It was then that the critics and scholars, little inclined by nature to mysticism, came forward, texts in hand, to show that Jesus and Jason are indeed synonymous, that Mithras was likewise born on the 25th of December, of a pure virgin, in the company of an ox, that Dionysos was likewise born on the 25th of December, and that the young god, forced to flee, was soon carried off on a donkey into Egypt, by old Silenus; finally, that even before the existence of Jesus, a certain Krishna had had exactly the same adventures in India, date for date, astronomically speaking. Discovering the story of the same principle at the root of all these myths, contemporary criticism concludes from it that there was never any more of an individual in one religion than in another, and that the one named Jesus has a good chance of having been born in the brain of a few philosophers in search of a new cult.
