First a positive meaning, expressed by the very datum of 1 histoire (a scanning garble for "l'histoire," i.e. "the story"): a child results from a father and a mother; then a comparative meaning, expressed by the relations among the characters: the relation of Light, of Shadow, and of Penumbra; finally a hermetic meaning, and by that very fact a very general one: the Law of production in Nature, the Sun and the Moon producing Mercury.
The law that dominates all this is the Law of Three. The principles are the active, the passive, and the neutral.
To discover the relations that exist among these three facts: the production of the Child, the production of the penumbra, the production of Mercury, I write them one below the other, carefully noting which is the active principle (+), the passive principle (—), and the neutral principle ( ), as follows:
A single glance cast upon this table suffices to see that the relations are admirably indicated. All the active principles of the observed facts are ranged under the same sign + which governs them all. It is the same with the passive principles and the neutral principles.
All the facts are ranged in the same arrangement, following a horizontal line, in such a way that, in reading this table vertically, one sees the relation of the principles to one another; in reading it horizontally, one sees the relation of the facts to the prin-

-ciples, and in surveying the whole of it one sees the general Law emerge from it.

An important consideration resulting from this arrangement is that, since all the facts are governed by the same law, these facts are analogous to one another and can be substituted one for another, taking care, in replacing one word, to choose another word governed by the same principle.
Hence a great confusion in the minds of those who see two apparently discordant facts placed side by side, as in the following sentence:
Our androgynous mercury is the child of the bearded Sun and of the Moon, its companion.
What relation can there be between this metal, the planets, and the generation attributed to them? Yet it is indeed an application of the analogical tables, for

Let us turn back to the few words on alchemy in Chapter XIII, and we shall understand fully.
Other phrases are likewise easy to reduce, for one who knows the relations, while remaining incomprehensible to the profane.
Thus the Alchemist will never say: change the Solid into Liquid, but rather: convert earth (solid) into water (liquid).
It follows from this that many ignorant people, taking alchemical phrases literally and reading:
You shall change water into earth and you shall separate earth from fire,
ruined themselves before finding the means of changing water into humus or of separating earth from fire. They have not slightly contributed to casting upon Occult Science the discredit it enjoys today. One need not go very far even now to find educated people who gravely maintain that the physics of the ancients was reduced to the study of their four elements, earth-water-air-fire. These are the very people who find the hermetic books so obscure, and for good reason.
If the use of the analogical method has been well understood, the importance of the tables that at once indicate the relations among the various objects will at once be seen.
These relations were of extreme usefulness in the practice of certain ancient sciences, among others Magic and Astrology.
